Rdltnr Wll'nnirlto Vitrim-r: A lady friend, a lover of llowers i and small fruits, "desires to know how to prepare the runners, tho soil, and how to cultivate) strawberries so : as to have large and delicious fruit." Delicious is a lady's word, and the above qiic-tioii Is much more easily i asked than answered. First, then, all strawberries will not grow alike on all Milk The first i requisite to .success is to prove, from experience, "What kinds or varieties do best on our soil, and our location. I la vo wo creek, river bottom, prai rie, or hill land .' Or, have we city lots, well manured, leaver dam, or cleared timber land V Now, certain kinds of .strawberries suit certain kinds of soils, or arc adapted to them. Tho richer the land Is such at wo make our gardens in tho bet ter, and tho larger the fruit. It Is true, tho land may bo so enriched by manure as to Induce too much foli age; nor, indeed, is the fruit so "de licious" as if grown inn soil with tho organic anil inorganic constitu ents properly balanced; for there can be too much humttt, mould decom posed vegetable matter and miner als sand, lime, magnesia, oxide of iron, chlorine, soda, etc. Anil, secondly, how to proparutho runners. This Is placing the cart be fore the horse. Wo must preparo tho soil heforo we can grow tho run ners properly. Then, wo tako a strong team, and plow and turn over tho soil as deeply as possible; sub soil, if we can, harrow, and roll. Now, .stretch a line the length of your bed, sotting tho plants by the line, one foot, or two, if you have plenty of land, apart in the rows, and the rows three feet apart. Just before the plants begin to form run ners, scatter over the bed, half an inch deep of well-rotled manure.--This acts u double purpose; is a mulch, keeping tho I. mil moist, and is food for the sponglolos of the roots of tho runners, stimulating them Into vigorous growth. Kow, whole there is quite a number of runners formed, on these are Joints or liuiN, which make Hie future liltlo plant. Tho little buds or plants send up leaves, and send down rootlets. As .-'oon as the little plants have rooted, the runner, or little vine beyond, should be pinched off, thus throwing tho whole .strength of the runner Into only one, instead of many lltth plants. Only four plant .should bo allowed to grow around the mother plant. Willi this number the little plants grow vigorously, and the mother-plant is not Impoverished. Say wo have one hundred Trionipho do (lauds in u row; these one hun dred eau produce four hundred little plants, as hero directed, without In jury to themselves, besides healing it crop of berries. And, farther, the four hundred little plants are so uvll nourished mid vigorous that, If set out in tho fall, (hey will bear heavily the ensuing season. Now, in taking up those little plants, to Insure vig orous growtli and fruit, a tmll of (drtli nioultl be tal.cn iiji with them, (hux urciirlng all their mot uniMtalr ril. When these little plants aro sot out, tho whole ball of earth .should besot In well-prepared soil, as di rected. If my lady friend will labor as herein required, she can grow large, 'delicious' strawberries, with Just such cultivation us she would glvo a tomato or a (lower. lYililc, Itomii.l i rli'luri", rollti", dr.ul ' PlIII.O-FllA'iAUI .
