wmvnran WILLA-MJCTTE FARMER. 3 Intemperance. Eui) read bdore Hie Iluek Tolnt Parmer' Uiili, b) Willi in i'rr 1 luivo chosen the old, luifkiicycil, threiullwirc theino of intenineiiinee upon which to predicate n few Mens. It is a subject fraught with stale Ideas and dK'otirngiiif,' rcmlnlscon ces of the just. 1 have done this boeauc, old and hackneyed as it is it lias not lieen sutllclently dNctisyei or nultated. Nor will this be the ease until tho merciless monster is so curely fettered in every limb and banished from our fair land. The destructive evils of Intemperance should bo denounced from tho ros trum, the pulpit, by the lire-tide In our own families, and through the public journals, that exert .such a mighty influence in molding public sentiment, until the public mind Is thoroughly awakened to tho impor Jnuco and necessity of decided mea sures being taken for the prevention of the manufacture and sale of in toxicating liquors. This prohibition idea will find many oppo&ers even among the warm frienils of temper ance. lJtit facts and tlgurcs, startling, though true, force the conclusion on my mind that to-day humanity, mo rality, religion, Justice, and econo my call loudly for sweeping prohibi tion. The heart of the philantroplst grows faint and weak while contem plating the almost hopeless prospect of eradicating this great evil through the medium of moral reformation. There arc thousands whose appetite for strong drink lias become so mor bid that they cannot or will not re sist the temptation when it Is pre sented, who could and would be re formed wero the temptation entirely removed. Tho advocates of prohibition would not be so exacting in their demands could one plausible reason be assign ed for continuing tho manufacture of nrdent spirits; yes, reasonable concessions might be granted could even one single redeeming feature connected with King Alcohol's reign bo offered in extenuation, otherwise than for medicinal purposes. If such thero be, wo demand of tho opposers of prohibition to show it, lor we hold that after hearing the charges, specifications, and evidence against this arch enemy of human happi ness, no jury in the United States, acting undr oath, could do otherwise than render u verdict of murder in tho lirst deirree. tho penalty of which is death. Statistics, which wo consider very reliable evidence In tho case, charge rum with killing SO.OOO victims annually, and as good authority as Horace Greeley puts the number at 100,000. These aro not killed by accident or in self-defense, nor is this wholesale murder the re sult of any provocation. It Is pre meditated murder for pecuniary gain. Hum and bis accessories do tho work. Ask that weeping, heart broken widow, Where is the loved husband of your youth? Tho answer is a chargo of murder against Alco hol. Ask that orphan child, wlio-e tattered garments tlutter In the cold winter wind like n signal of distress from a wreck of intemperance, Where is your father'.' and that pit iable spectacle, tho very picture of want mm suuering, win repiy, Alco hol destroyed our living, and then killed my lather; the blow was too much for my poor mother, and she too sank into the grave, and lam left alone, a friendless orphan. Oh, how 1 envy those llttlo boys and girls who have Christian parents and comfortable home-, and enough of food and clothing, sixty thousand orphans and twenty thou-aud wid ows will glvo testimony to the same facts against thl-, the most merciless llend that was ever allowed to stalk abroad over tho land day and night, "coking whom ho may devour." Nothing but misery, poverty, degra dation, mid death follow In Ills train, lie robs his votaries of health, intel lect, mid life it.H'lf, and has never been known to confer a single bene fit upon any individual otherwise than above slated. Tho mind is tilled with astonishment, and the heart with sorrow, when we acquaint ourselves with the facts set forth in tho United States statistics concern ing the number of distilleries, iiuim tity of liquor consumed annually, and the enormous sum of money paid for intoxicating beverages. The noxious fumes riso from IW.OOO dis tilleries, which manufacture 72,000, OtO gallons of liquor; 270,000 persona aro required to perform tho labor; 130,000 rum shops disgraco our coun try, and hero ills Satanic Majesty rinds employment for :00,ooo more; while out of a opulatiou of about 11,000,000 there are liquor-drinking people enough to pay the vast amount of $1,000,000,000 annually for anient spirits. This would suiqort 333,iKi free r-chools at an annual cost of $3,000 each. In consequence ot Intemperance, there Is a deteriora tion oi labor amounting to $1,000, 000,000; or If the time actually squan dered by inebriates were Improved in labor, and the proceeds given to our Government, the national debt eould be paid o(T in ten years. Intemperance is very prolific, and one of its shameless offsprings is1 pauperism, which yearly costs the country siiu.OOO.OOO. Tho excessive tne of rum causes sickness and sickness calls for doctors, whose lit tle bills foot up $10,000,000. Intem perance causes destitution, and des titution with many is sumclcut ex cue ror tno commission or crliiu ? . ' i . ""-v" Jl".v. and otrended laws demand the pun J ' vlctct! Mm, iiiiiMip was hung. Mothers, orphans, and suffering little children certainly have rights tho law-making power Is bound to respect. In this land of light and liberty, professing to be Christian, and bearing the proud appellation of Republic, is it not a shame and disgrace that such an en emy of individual and public peace, such an enemy of progress and re form, of intelligence, of Justice, economy, and morality, in short, such an enemy of everything that N elevating and ennobling, should not bo restrained by the strong arm of power '. If human slavery demand ed abolition enactments, much inoro does intemperance demand prohib itive laws, for of the two I regard tho latter as the creator evil.
