The only tourco of "relief tliat now
h dlscernable, isa licalty competition
on the river; wo do not desire oppo
sition, because that means strife for
the mastery, and one or the other
must fcoon withdraw, and tho ship
per pays tho bill. But If this now
company carries out tho schedule of
prices that Is now printed, thoro will
bo nothing to complain of, but the
danger 1 that tho old line will como
as low, if not lower, and all will pat
ronize tho old lino; consequently the
new lino will be compelled to with
draw, and then wo will bo In as bad
a flx as before. I am told that tho
old company has said they will never
run a boat through the locks, and If
tfiey do not, they certainly cannot
(.arry freight as cheap as tho Willam
ette River Transportation Company.

A Few Plalo Words.
' Editor Willamette Farmer:
As I am at this tlmo giving my at
tention to farming and breeding
stock, I read with much interest tho
discussions of farmers in their diirer
eut Clubs, and I attended one In my
locality in which I was reiuoled to
take part and become a member. I
declined to Join, and gave as myrea
on that 1 would wait until I could
.certain by their actions what course
they wore- going to pursue. If they
were going to try to make two spears
cf grass grow whero only ono had
grown, also to ascertain how to carry
tho most slock on their pastures, and
tho management of stock and best
breeders compared with common
stock. The most important feature,
as I look upon It, has not as yet boon
brought before tho clubs, and that Is
pasturing stock in winter after it bo
comes very wet. I think there 1
more wasto than farmers are awaro
of, and the loss since I have In en In
Oregon in riming slock on wet grouds
and in burning straw, I have nodoubt
amounts to millions. .Such discus-t-iuu
as will bilng forth practical re
sults will not only bo very Interest
lug, but very p roll table, lint to meet
and dcuounco trading men, and call
them speculators, and say they wero
forming rings and laying plans to
i-teal your property In tho lattor
courheofaclub,Icould not join them,
considering tho time would not only
be wasted, but It would work a ser
ous injury to Oregon. Wo want to
oneourago trading men to como
among us, mid for one, I desire to
give them encouragement. 1 havo
been one amongst you, and am well
known by reputation, and as 1 havo
laid down that and retired on ono of
my farms, four miles from Salem, I
ask you to take this in all klinlncs
fiom me, as thoso hard words of
" rings," "combinations to Meal,"
Ac, aro not meant for me, as I am I
hope retired, and hope to remain on
my farm with my llttlo family, and
again no oi some ocneni to you as a
breeder of good stock, and In Intro
ducing tho best grasses and studying
the best mode or farming.
Farmers of Oregon, I wish your
best interest", and would like to talk
with you every ono personally, but
that cannot be. But, if desired, I
will wrlto a few articles, and bring
somo points before the clubs for their
discussion. You all know I am not
(i practical farmer, but it is admitted
that I have somo knowledge in rais
ing stock, as I raised tho best and
heaviest bullock on this coast, also
tlfty of tho best cattle ever taken to
Victoria, it Is said, by 200 IK per
head, and my hogs have been much
noted. With theso recommenda
tions, I ask admittance; and after ad
inlttuuco wo will have somo plain
family talk about thoso speculators,
and warehouses, and lings, and boll
Jng tho rts A.c. As 1 havo for a
number of years been a speculator, I
can jj'ivo you somo facts, and urn
thluKlng of giving you my method
d curing meats, which bus had so
uiuch reputation. Thomas Chosk.
