CIIADWICK. Secretary of State. Mr. Allen IJiicklnglinm, writing from this place to tho Concordln (Kansas) Umpire, speaks thus of towns in Oregon : Portland Is virtually Mm niotrrmnlU of Oregon, and Is a plnee of much Importance; contnlns about 12,000 people, and Is tho terminus of two railroads; nnd within n yenr, and perhnps less time, two other railroads will termlnnto here. Decides, it is so situated that It commands the river nnd coast trade of nearly all of Oregon nnd Washington Territory. Theclty is growing rapidly. Arrivlngnt Portland about 10 p. in. we stopped for the night. JCuvliig Portland nt 81 o'clock, wc soon reached Oregon City, which is 8ttunted nt tho Falls of tho Willam ette. The finest water power in the world Is located here. The Willamette ltivcr. which is navigable for nearly 100 miles, plunges over 30 feet high, at this place, which nd'ords water power for any number of factories, mills, Ac. A large woolen factory Is located here. Wc readied our old home, nt half past 11 a. m., nnd found tho good old town up witii other towns in the march of improvement. A Titicklmiito correspondent of the Dallas Republican says: "I suppose you have heard of the organization of n Farmers' Club to which most of the substantial farmers of the Luckl mutc and surrounding country belong. Their aim Is to force the millers nnd speculators to pay high prices for their wheat, ami if they could induco tho tiic farmers of other counties to fol low their example, I do not know but what they will succeed. Tho constitu tion nnd Hy-Lnw8 provide, "Jfo member shall be allowed to dispose of his wheat for lees than Boventy-llve cents, and then only after giving tho Club the refusal. Should any of the members bo forced to sell before It brings that price, they will take his wheat and advance him fifty cents per bushel.ho paying intercstoii the mon ey until the wheat is disposed of. In case the price raises and the wheat Is sold, ho gets Ills share of the advance after deducting the interest." Governor Washburn, in ills lute message to the legislature of Wiscon sin, hold that under the Constitution tho people are nbsoluto masters of every railway In the Btate. Corporate powers in the United States nro vast and overshadowing, ho says, and Just causo of alarm; but, if Wisconsin railroads oppress people, tho Legisla ture cun, If they will, always protect the public, who, on their part, can nl wavs control the Legislature. Philosophy teaches us that since tho creation of the world not one particle of matter has been lost. It may have passed into new shapes, or combined with other elements; it may have floated away into vapor, but it comca back some time In tho dewdrop or the rain, assisting tho bud to swell, tho leaf to grow, uud the fruit to develop, m Frankfort, Ky., is graced by the residence of Mr. It. II. Taylor, who was vaccinated in 1700, being to the host of his knowledge and belief one of the first persona on whom the ope ration waa periormco. m m Dr. Iluchncr, scientifically consider ing woman, asserts that tho existence of the sex Is " not an Inherent natural neeessity' Perhaps not, in Ills opin ion, since he has been born, but there was a time when it was a decided necessity to him. , The lesson of tho late tires seems to be that tho only really Incombustible matcrluls in the world are those of which are made the frlctlon-matcbea which one finds in hotels. The Christian young men of Itos ton nro organizing a prayer meeting and refuge for tho dostitu to combined where the poor mny get temporary lodging and bored. Wk are indebted to Hon. Frederick Watts, Commissioner of Agricultrue, for.a' copy 'of the Report of the Department for 1671. The present acene of the Modoo war is wholly in California. Tule orRhett Lake Is almost entirely in that KUte. The Indiana are on the south aid of this lake, and several miles beyond the Oregon line. fc The bop crop of the Puyallup yalley for the year 1672 waa nearly, if not quit aqual in value to the grain crop of the same region. 1 Fralt nnd Fruit Trees. i O. W. Hunt, committee, makes I tho following report to the Rock Point Fnnners' Club: I Your committee on "fruit nnd fruit trees" would report nit increaslnc interest in the planting out of ' now orchnnN, but; regrcl to sco it disposition to replant old orchards ' with now trees, ns it is impossible to repeat an old orchard with new trees and succeed. ' Wo would sugge.st the plnnting of suo-nciii or sweet varieties or apples, as a valuable auxiliary in wintering of stock, for this purpose would re commend the white winter pcarmaiu workedlow on whole secdlliigstocks, , wo would recommend the Ueaure Easter pear for more general cultiva tion (In good pervutlon at tltis j date). 1 Wo would favor the general culti- ; vation of the cherry on tho muzzard stock, (no other). And wo think think thero is too little nttontion paid , to tlieeultlvationoftlie grape. Would favor the keeping of tho heads of all I kiudsjof fruit trees as near the ground as possible. Would recommend the , German prune to the consideration or this Club. U.W.I It'NT, Committee. Intended New Impoutation of Meuinoh. A. O. Stoucslfer, from near Hill's Kerry, Stanislaus county, called last week for information to enable him to send to France for tho purchaso nnd immediate shipment of a number of the best French Merinos to bo found on tho Continent. Mr. 8. is fully awaro that at tho re cent great German Exhibition of fine wooled sheep, American Merinos took all tho first prizes; uud further that theso 'snino sheep necessarily descended from tho old French stock, of u larger siro than the present Amer ican sheep. His object therefore now is, to cross tho best American super ior in fineness of fleece, but small in size, witii tho old puro blood, with n vlow If possible of increasing thosizo of tho sheep without deteriorating tho quality of the fleece. 6'. '. Hit' ral Prets. Politics and the Patuonh. In the last number of tho Iowa Jfome ttcad eight correspondents discussed tho question of tho expediency of tho Patrons of Husbandry taking politi cal action as an order, and six of tho eight favored tho proposition to n greater or less extent. Tho Home' stead lias expressed itself as opposed to such action. A FAiiMEH near Dubuque, In., named Kelly, while handling bits from tho mouths, of diseased horses, got somo mucus on it bruised linger. Tho poison rapidly spread, resulting in tho nmputution of his arm. It is thought hu will lose his life. A muddy stream, flowing into one clear nnd sparkling, for n tlino rolls along by itself. A little further down they unite nnd Uio whole Is impure So youth, untouched by sin, may for n time keen its purity in foul com pany, but urllttio later they mingle, The year 181(1 was the coldest ever known in tho Eastern States. The chncnes seem to be that it will find its match at length in 1673. m A gentleman Jn Wuyno county, Miss., in 1851), planted somo Spanish cork acorns received from the department of agriculture. They alf came np, and tho largest treo had at tho commencement ot 1872, attained tho height of about thirteen feet, the trunk being eleven Inches in diameter uud tho cork around tho body more than uiijuch thick.
