appreciate his disinterestedness, for
ho labors for the popular good.
Tho value of tho telegraph monop
oly to those who own it may be gath
ered from tho fact that while they
make oath, that tho value of exist
ing lines in this country is about
$25,000,000, the Postmaster General
claims that they can be duplicated
for ton millions. This the president
of the Western Union tries to deny,
but tho Postmaster General is per
Klstont in asserting it. Tho question
to be decided is whether Congress
can bo induced to do any thing
against a monopoly which finds its
stock worth twenty to thirty times
above cost, which has no doubt been
correspondingly "watered."
MISCELLANEOUS.
I heard Bret Harte givo n lecture
hero a few ovonings since, to a large
audience and ono that was much in
terested. Ills description of the
adventurers who sought California
in 1849, and in tho early days, and of
tho moor that epoch, was illustrated
by felicitous incidents.

Hicuro some aid for tho Portland,
Dalles A Salt Lake railroad. Memo
rials from Oregon and Tdaho, asking
Congrcs for u land grant to aid this
enterprise, were presented In
tho IIouso on Monday and were
ordered printed. It is not popular
now to favor land grant, but there
U much to bo said in favor of this
ono and it would iccuro to our Stuto

land as exists from San rrancNeo,
and give tho Columbia river power
and prominence as greai coiuiiif.'-

Wheat PnosrKcr in.Exui.and.
The Murk Lano Express, of Decem
ber 23d, contains an article on the
wheat prospect in England, from
which wo learn that only "about
one-half tho wheat intended to havo
been sown had been got in.and that in
the worst postiblo condition," owing
to the wet state of the ground and
that which had come up "looked wan
and sickly." "Favorable circum
stances between the present time
and harvest may slightly modify the
gloomy prospect now before in, but
they can no more brine n good crop
than exterior decorations can givo
stability to a houso on a bad founda
tion." Tho London Time says : "Judg
from present appearances, tho area
under wheat In wheat in 1873 will
provoono of the shortest on record,
and this following tho most Inferior
crop which has been harvested for
many years, must awaken serious
apprehensions on the part of tho con
sumers as well as producers. Per
haps a higher range of prices than
those of the present would, by increas
ing the already liberal foreign sup
ply, eventually prove the best policy."
