This, how ever, he cannot do if ho relics main ly upon grain-rnislng for a living. The fact that. California is generally an exporter of wheat, that tho west ern States of tho Mississippi valley always have a'ereat surplus, that the west coast of South America is an exporter of wheat also, that China is not a liberal-purchaser, "that Europe is too far off to bo ft' good customer except in times of great' wars or gen eral famine, should, decide 'Oregon farmers at onco to adopt-a mixed husbandry. Tho truth fs, wo need and ought to havo a homo market. If wo could feed at our own doors tho raanufuctors who clotho us and construct our implements of hus bandry, (hen ice could tell them some' thing besides wheat. Then we could rotate our crops and feed them cab' bages, potatoes, turnips, parsnips, pumpkins, squashes, tomatoes, beef, mutton, port, poultry, eggs, butter, cheese, etc. Xot so now what we give them In exchange for out importations of clothing, Ac. Is wheat, cuanwheat, and that loo otter it hat been taxed down by the middlemen to m very low figure. Then we can save our toil and money at home, a thing we never can do so long as we buy everything and manufacture nothing. After this. Interesting speeches were mado by Jt. C. Ueor nnd V. Cranston, but tho mmco allowed will not admit of their insertion. Club adjourned to meet at Luw renco Eizcnhart's on Saturday, Jan. lMh, 187:J. , T. W. Davi'SI'Oht, ec'y. V L'iosRi:n Oil Mill. The follnwlng concerning tho nmniifiioturo of I.ln--:ccd Oil Hi Oregon, we tnke from the Commercial Reporter: The llritnml only factory erected is tho I'loiieer Oil Factory at rialctu, whleh was Iiicorpo rated Nov. 1st, ISflO, with the capital stock placed at $00,00), divided into 000 shares of $100 each. Tho tlr-t I.ln wcl Oil was manufactured Doe. -Mil, 1607, and owing to the machinery be ing of the latent and best Improved nnttpin olitnlnnblc at tho Krtt. the Oil turned out was of superior iunllly and met with quick sale. Since then the factory has had control of Mil iniir l:et, and owing to the supeilor .jimlity Oil made Is attracting attention abroad. The capacity of the mill Is 160,000 gallons per annum, but only about 60,000 gallons anntmllyaic man ufactured. The Salem mill can fully supply all tho demand of tho North Taclflc coast. There arc but two OH mills on tho Pacillo coast one in San Franclnco, and the other In fali-m, Or egon. The Oil Meal, of which there is manufactured several hundred ton, meets with quick wile; in fact, the Company found it ditllciilt durlm; the past Winter to supply tho demand, owing to the very general favor in which it is held for tattle feed by con sumers. The mill I- run by water with a 48 inch Lellel turbine wheel. fln flint Oil can be manufactured tit light expense. The main olll.'u of the Company is at .Salem. The onlcei are Joseph Holman, l'rc-ldent ; 0 I Holman, Secretary; J. II. Albert, Treasurer. During the year there has been sent on orders considerable of the Oil to tho Hawaiian Islands, where its supe rior quality has caused it to meet with a ready market at full rates. To Brit ish Columbia anil Puget Bound seve ral invoices were forwarded during the Summer. Now that tho Oregon and California Railroad is in runiilnir or der as far South as Uo-cburg, In I nip qua Valley, It can reasonably bo ex pected that the trade of Southern Ore ton will take the Oregon maiiiitaetiiiii in prelcrencc to the Kastern and Cali fornia, oven at tho same rates, tor, aside from it being of superior quality ,,,! tt ..... ii wi urtt mUtnkcii. clicniHT. the chances of no leakage Is greatly in 1 tavor 01 1110 iiregun iiiiiiiinu.uin.-i.
