them in corn, potatoes, iquushes, cabbages, beets, beans, turnip, ear rots, and parsnips. These should bo cultivated in squares and the ground plowed at least four times during tho dry, hot season. This process will clean the land or foul seed and enliven it for a heavy grain crop tho next year. This first crop will four times pay for all seeds and labor of It. Upon such land, thus niannged, enormouscropsoffallorsprlngwheat or oats can bo raised tho next season. Wheat should follow upon oats, and oats upon wheat stubble. But In all cases tho stubblo should bo turned under deeply tho previous fall and ht rot, and tho land plowed more shallow in the spring than in tho fall. Fresh deeply plowed land in tho -prlng will not yield well that sum mer. In consequence of tho low pri ces of potatoes this year, and tho .uck of sales, several farmors have tried the experiment of feeding them to their milk oows. And in every case the great increase of milk and its superior quality for butter, the pay is equal to fifty cents per bushel for tho potatoes! There aro some varieties of stock potatoes that yield enormous crop, and many of them will yield well, where the fancy po tatoes yield but poorly. I know of several pieces of wheat, grown this year on potato land of last year, which yielded from 10 to 55 bushels per aero plump grain. I have tried old run down, foul land In summer fallow with potatoes, and that crop told for fifty dollars per acre, while tho wheat crop that succeeded yield ed -10 bushels of good wheat per acre. But there is another crop, which if it can bo mado a success here, will bo of incalculable vnhto to prodNccr.4 and consumers, and will keep in our country tens of thousands of dollars of gold unnually, which have hereto fore gouo out of our State. Thisls (he fax crop, and having had much ox- perlcnco in raising that crop In Vir ginia and Illinois, in former times, and my observations here, and .some experiments already tried in West ern Oregon, I slinll with your permit, enlargo upon tho whole subject of flax culturo here, which will bo forth coming shortly. Tho fall is very fa vorablo to prepare successfully for a largo flax crop next season. Who will raise flax? David Nkwsom. The Fiiiemuk. When tho news of tho burning of Portland was an nounced on our streets last Sunday morning, tho Salem Fire Department turned out In mil rorre, took capital Engine, No. 1, to the depot, placed it on ft car, and, attached to tho ox press train, went to tho burning city, reaching there at 4 p. in. They wore loudly cheered on their arrival, and immediately went to work exting uishing the" flames. Firo companies from Vancouver, Oregon City, and Albany, also went to tho assistance of their brethren In Portland. Pardoned. Madison Bledsoe, sen tnnced to tho nonltentlary for life, was pardoned by Gov. Grovcr on Christmas Day, after Having been in tho prison about olght years. Hon. N. II.
