WILLAMETTE FAEMER. forttsponbitttt. The Coming Demand for Animal Food. CuiCACio. Oct. 2.". 1972. Ed. Fahmer. ThcroUn growing demand for animal food. The lilsli prico of moat In England, led to the lato riots. This liicrh nrleo wns brought about from the scarcity of nnimul food, nnd by a combination of ft serious character which Is not of a transient nature. The most import ant causes of this scarcity and high prico nro tho loss of cattle from foot nnd mouth disease and the rinder pest, mid tho decreased imports from tho Continent, owing to tho samo diseases there, and tho high prices resulting therefrom, nnd tho great droughts of 1808 andJ1870, which led to the killing of n great many cattle at too young an ago. Also tho in creased population of Great JJrnitnn, nnd tho increased prosperity of the working elass, which enables them to eat nnlmal food dally, instead of weekly, as heretofore. The Franco Gorman war, which led to tho hostllo occupation of one-tilth of the terri tory of France, and to the great con sumption nnd inevitable waste of an imal food by two vast armies in the field. Tho ndvancing prico is found also in Germany as well as in England mill In Vnllinn Aililtn llwi... mihui.w I the -prosperity -of ;tho working people I of Continental Euroiie. and tlio!.-In- creasing power to consume animal food, nnd It becomes evident that the growing demand can hardly be met by any adequate supply. This sup ply of food miht 1)0 furnished to n United States i mw.iimi ijinioa westerns ates. great extent by tho and principally by tlio Wo exported ot bacon from ISO" to 1S70, 13,000,000 pounds; in 1871, 00, 000,000; duringtliopredontyear, 50, 000,000, exclusive of pork in barrels, nnd will reach nearly :i()0,000,000 pounds by tho close of the year. Our exports aro not confined to Great Britain, as In the former yoars, but wo export to tho entrepots of France, Germany nnd Hclgium. Largo purchases for futtiro delivery have already been mado for Conti nental Europe. This growing de mand for nnimnl food must cause tho live stock of this county to rlso In price. Tlio number of hogs packed in 1800, was 1,0S."),000; in 1872, It is es timated at -1,780,000. This will be 800,000 larger than 1ho largest year on record. Thero is now with us a deficiency of bacon for Southern and forelcn It has recently been mid that f niflii f .... nvpn-wlvn fcini.l- nf l,,.ri,l If our e.ccsslo stock or barrel j pork had been cured as bacon, we should begin tlio new packing year ' with empty warehouses.
