At a re cent meeting of the London School Board, Prof. Huxley delivered quite an elaborate speech in opposition to the use of the Bible in the public schools of that city. Of tho first chapter of tho Book of Genesis, ho said : "The rendinjr of this chanter would convoy whatever the chapter was intended to convey that the world was made in nix natural days. I don't say whether that Is tho right interpretation or not ; but I appeal to the common sense of tho Board, whether that is not tho interpreta tion which every child capable of un derstanding tho English language would naturally derive from the statement contained in tho Book of Genesis; and, that being tho case, it is perfectly certain that this state ment Is erroneous, and no moro ca pable of being disputed than whether the earth ctnnds still or not. I sub mit that it Is an absolute crime that thin Board should wind ion the In stilling into tho minds of the chil dren statcinonts which nro not true, nnd which' iho instruction they re ceive n few years later will most In ftdllbiy unt. g You C.will perceive that In dealingvlth this' question, I do not. ask 'tho Board' to Ictivo out from tho ordinary lessons of tho Bi ble, (hat which I, and tho men who think with me, might consider not to be correct. I do not nk that. That would bo asking too much in the present stato of affairs. But what I do ask, nnd what I linvo a rlglitito ask, and what you ns honest men must grant, is this, that these tender children shall not bo taught that which" you do not yourselves lie Hcvci" ''(Applause.) Tin: Education ok Giiii.8 in England. J.I J A Advocateh of a liberal education for women will be glad to team that a young lady student In tho State University of Missouri has gained the first prize for Greek scholarship. Miss J. F. Ripley has tho honor of being the first woman who has ever surpassed tho young men in such a contest. i The Legislature of Pennsylvania has enacted a law, making women over twenty-one years of age eligible ' to tho oflico of School Director. It would seem that there is a di rect conflict between the law In this country and in England on tho ques tion whether suicide, or an attempt to commit suicide, Is a crime. Some months ago the question was carried up to the Supreme Court of Massa chusetts, and that tribunal decided it in the negative. But in Ireland, a short time since, a magistrate fined n man two shillings nnd six pence for jumping into tho river, whence ho wns rescued by tho bystanders. This indicates that while an attempt at fc(o dc sc is a crime, it Is not regarded ns a very serious one.
