Club meets at tho houcs of the

hits every man where he liver. At
present, It consist) of fifteen mem
bers, but I predict that tho time Is
not far distant when It will number
over fifty, and bo tho principal Insti
tution of learning in this part of
Marlon county.
Tho subject discussed on last Mon
day was " Clearing brush land," nnd
is there Vere somo important sug
gestions made by practical men, I
will give your readers a short synop
Ms. Mr.-B,A Leonard had hi red. .a
man to chop the oak: brush oa twelve
and a hnlf;acros, idnfctrWof 1M0.
The young sprouts were sprinkled
with brlno and kept down by -the
hhccplioneniidcattlei sbtliut in,
three years ttio.jumps Verjrdoud,'
many of-them,xW rotten uVtobe
readily turned out with tho plow.
He then sowed tho pleco to wheat,
and continued it In wheat for three
year?. Tlio second year it, yielded
twenty-eight bushels lothefuere, but
it was not u gooil stand of grain. In
Ills opinion, freshly clcarctl land does
not produco tho .best crop the first
year, but requires inoro cultivation
and a longer e.iosure to sun and
rain. This experiment satisfied Mn
L. that cutting off oak brush and
following with brlno und sheep was
thqcheapc&t ,jnd. easiest rway of
clearing land when three" years could
le allowed for tho work.
In roply to tho .remark, "That
kind of grubbing may lo easy for a
man, but tho sheep might tell an
other sort of story," Mr. Leonard
said that the sheep were not confined
upon tho piece, and ate only what
they desired. They, were not as fat
as those upon ira!rl,Mbut kfcpt'ln as
good condition as any. "running on
wood and brush land. He had also
chopped down tho brash, mostly fir,
upon forty acres, at a coit-.of about
flvo dollars per ncroequiil rm ?'20fl
and, after burning, had sold 12,000
poles at a cent apiece, had used over
i,uuu in loiicing upon ms owu lurm,
besides fire-wood used and given

-Mr.-JrTv-Coxp-who-llves-in-the
brush and has had much experience
in clearing, statodtliat ho had found
it'best, when onlt'aiuriflr'aro mixed,
to cut all down together, nsJIt Is
much easier to deal with the oak
roots and such sprouts as may come,.
than with the deadened, rough,
stiff, and charred oak saplings that
remuiu standing after a burn, when
they are not cut.. The ground set-,
ties ceasiderablyiaf&r tKe'bimi.'thw
leaving tfee-,otJc oet3.pcli .exposed
to attack by the grubbing-hoc. He
expressed his decided opinion that
grass seed should be sown immedi
ately after tho burn, before the poles
are removed. Ho thought that more
of the seed wouldvcohie, oven
thoughsomeBlghbTcafrjed away
upon tho poles. Hoconcurred with
Mr. A.Lconard in tho opinion that
freshly cleared land cannot be made
to produce tho best crop of wheat the
first,, year. Timothy gras seems,
Kbwovof, to thrlvo and produce most
bountifully.
lrK.'V. Hlbbaid jiad' had con
siderable experience In clearing land
covered Avlth llrnudoAk, mostly tho
former and N ho- had "followed the
plan indicated by Messrs. Leonard
nnd Cox, viz: cutting nil down and
trimming the largo fir trees. The
cost of such' clearing had been S4 per
aero and board, or a total of $.r.50.
After burning, he had sowed timo
thy secd which took with alacrity
nnd produced a crop of excellent
quality nnd quantity. He stated
that tho fire was so intenso ns(to kill
many of tho oak stooN', whlcliSvns ri
clear gain the rct luid sprouted,
but ho intended to cut them on", or
sheep them off, which Is easier, and,
according kto tcstluiony,.cqualIy as
successful. " vvv ,
Mr. It. CGecr said that his expe
rience in clearing brush laud ex
tended from tho time he-was sulll
ciently largo to pick up brush until
tho present hour, and If there was
any subject upon which ho had a de
cided opinion, it was in relation to
thN. More than fortyyears ago, in
tho State of Ohio, his father had
proved that the. cheajwtt not the
jcctlht way to clear brush land,
was to chop tho top, burn them, and
then keep tho young sprouts down
with sheep. Once a week his, father
went over tho clearing nnd sprinkled
tho shoots with brine, and the sheep
did thorrest. Hickory' and walnut
they would not eat, but ho believed
that there. Is no sprout In Oregon on
which sheep will not feed.r He
know that thcy-wlll eat oak, fir, mh
pie, willow, hazel, etc., otc. Ho en
tirely .concurred with tho. remarks
made by Messrs. Coxt Leonard, and
Hibbard, and bclioved Unit tlio best
, way to cleargrouiid of oakis.to take
out tho roots with a mattock, and
with no other ower but man power.
Ho did not think horse power was a
success, taking into account expense.
'trouble of separating tho roots so as
to bo portable and usable for fire
wood, and tho filling up of' the pits
where tho dirt had bcenremoved on
the rooty by horsepower."
Mr. Henry Allen said that ho had
had somo inclination to purchasoa
capstan and ropes forgrubbing pur
poses, but that after a comnnrison of
tho two methods of horso.powcr and
iui man iiowerwiiiiviiic gruoouig
hoe or mattock, he preferred tho
latter. Ho and his boys had worked
with mattocks on one sldo of a lino
fence, whilo his ncighbor,;had. work
ed with a horso.t-apstun ou.tlie other
side ; nnd after a carcfur comparison
he had-reluctantly adopted tho con
clusion that hors) jiowor in grubbing
is not a saving of labor, time, or mo
ney, nnd that tho man with a mat
tock is our resource at last. Ilo
hoped, however, that something
could be, dovlsed to save the hard
laltor'of blearing our oak land. Ho
thought eight hours a day as long as
a man ought to work at that busi
ness, which was fully concurred in
by all present.
-Mr. Volnoy Leonard reported that
a neighbor of his had been using a
hand capstan, worked by his chil
dren, wlilch seemed to promlso somo
advuulngein the use oftpowcr. Ho
