"WILLAMETTE FAEMEE. lit itnb Tntmor. Penmnkers arc ft btul lot. They mako pconlo steel pen, find then they say they do write. Old Money Daps says that a clrl with an Income of thnc thousand dol lars a year or more Is always ati object of Interest, because she has so much principal. A mother was much amused the other day to hear this bit of "m-ru-nient" from her little boy : "Mamma, I dont see how Satan could linvo turn ed out to be such ft bad fellow there wasn't nny devil to put him up to It !" The following notice printed on col ored card-board, with ft nice bonier, hangs up In n place of business In Home, 7f. Y.: "Mebbo you don't bet ter had loaf round here, ven you don't got some pceslnes, ain't It?" " What carot-headed, ugly little ur chin Is that madam ? Do you know his name?" "Why, yes. ho Is my youngest son." " You don't say so Indeed 1 What a dear little dove-eyed (hcrub he is !" The Inst subject discussed by the Vlrglllan Debating Society, of ltoston, was, "If you had to have a boll, where would prefer to have it I" The unani mous dcalslon of the members was, "On some other fellow." For a specimen of logical consecu tion of Ideas wo venture to commend this, from n schoolboy's composition : "Tobacco was invented by a man named Walter ltalelgh. When the people first saw him smoking they thought ho was n steamboat, and, as they had never seen n steamboat, they were frightened." Artcmus Ward was on a slow Cali fornia train, and ho went to thecon ductcrand suggested tliatihccowcatch. or was on the wrong end of the train ; "For," Mild he, "you will never over take a cow, you know ; but if you'd put it on the other end It might be useful, for now there's nothln' on earth to hender iv cow from walkin' right in and bit In.' the folks 1" Tho latest dodge of a parent to over come his son's aversion to medicine, and "doctor" him at tho same time, occurred In Cleveland, whero a croupy youngster was induced to mako quite n hearty meal of buckwheat cuko and "maplo sirup;" but the latter proved to be nice sirup of squill. Tho boy Mild he thoucht something ailed tho moiasses tuc mimitu iiih miner tow him to eat all he wanted This Is a story in Old and -Xcw : A man had sold himself to the devil, who was to poess him at a certain time unless ho could proound a ques tion to his satanlc inoJeMy which he could not answer, ho being allowed to put throe queries to him. The time camu for the devil to claim his own, and lie consequently appear ed. Tho llrst question the man asked was concerning theology to which It caused the devil no trouble to reply. The second ho also answered without hesitation. The man's fate depended on tho third. Wluitshall It be V Ho hesitated and turned pale, and tho cold dew stood on his forehead, while he shivering with anxiety, ner vousness, and tho devil triumphantly fnccred. At this Juncture the man's wife appeared In the room with ft bon neton her head. Alarmed at herhus band's condition, sho demanded to know tho cause. When Informed, she laughed and said, " I can propound a question which tho devil cannot an swer. Ask him ' which is tho front of this bonnet?" Tho devil gave it up and rclrcd in disgust, and tho man was free. LiN.sr.KD Oil Manutactoky in Okkcjon. Tho manufacture of Un--eecl oil in Oregon, Niys the Commer cirl liejtorler, is of comparatively re cent origin. Tho llrst and only fac tory erected Is tho Pioneer Oil Fac tory tit Salem, mid was iiicorionitcd Xov. 1, 18CC, with tho capital placed at $00,000, divided Into 100 shares at $100 each. Tho llrst linseed oil was manufactured Dee. .."), 16C7, and ow ing to tho machinery being of the latest and best improved pattern oh tuinablo at tho East, the oil turned out was of superior quality and met witli quick sale. Sluco then tho fac tory litis had control of this market, and owing to the superior quality of tho oil manufactured is attracting at tention abroad. Tho capacity of tho mill is 180,000 gallons per nuuiini, but only about 120,000 gallons annually aro manufactured. Tho oil meal, of which thero Is manufactured sovoral hundred ton, meets witli quick sale; In fact, tho company found it diffi cult during the past winter to supply tho demand, owing to tho very gen eral favor in which it is held for cat tlo feed by consumers. Tho mill is run by water, with a -18-inch Leffel turbino wheel. So that oil can be manufactured at light expense. Tho main ofllco of tho company is at Sa lem. Tho officers aro Joseph Hot mail, President; Georgo P. Holman, Agent ; James Penny, Superintend ent. If there can bo built up a largo export trade, tills branch of our in dustrial pursuits will increase, as tho clinmto and soil combine to make tills u favored Stato for growing flax. lomtstre fuwipis. Cook your raisins before placing them in pies, cakes or puddings. Soaklngthcm Is not sufficient. Steam ing them by pouring n small quanti ty of boiling water amongst them in a tightly closing dish, and allowing them plenty of tlmo to cook beforo opening, is n good plan. ( When rai sins aro rightly cooked beforo using they nppcar plumper, and moro pal atable, and enough more healthful to be eaten without injury to most dys peptics. A Good Soup. Take fresh meat lono of any kind and boll until the meat will readily fall to pieces, add pepper and talt for seasoning, pota toes peeled and cut, and u very little thickening, or if preferred put a half a tcacupful of rlco in with your meat when llrst put on. Dread may be added when taken up, or hnvo somo biscuit rolled thin to lay around on tho top when tho potato is put in. Salt meat soup may bo mado In tho sanio way by freshening tho meat so that it will not mako tho soup too salt. To Maki:Di:an Poituiiiai:. Put one pint of beans to soak over night; tho next morning put them to boil in a sufficient quantity of wator for tho porrldgo, with a corned beef bono to season tho snmo ; have ono pint of corn hulled tho day before, and add about two hours beforo tho meat Is done. When tho meat is done ten der tako it out, mako a little thick ening for tho porrldgo with Indian meal and very little Hour. -Milk and pepper may bo ndded when eaten, according to the taste. M01.ASSIH Candy. Tako two quarts of tho best niolas-es, ono pound of brown sugar, tho Juice of two lemons, or a tcaspoonful of strong csscuco of lemon. Mix, and boil to tho proper consistency. Tako euro that it docs not burn. Put it on a buttered plate, and when partially cooled pull it In tho usual way. Tho longer you pull it, tho whiter it will become. A Remedy fohtiik IIkadauiik. Dr. Warburton Regble, (Edinburgh Medical Journal) advocates tho use- of turpentine in the severe heiMliiehe to which nervous and hysterical women arc subject. "There Is moreover," ho says, "another class of Htillerers from headache, and this is composscd of both saxes, who may bo relieved by turpentine. I refer to tho frontal head ache, which Is met apt to occur after prolonged meutal effort, but may like wise bo induced by unduly sustained physical exertion wltot may be styled tho headache of afatlgued brain. A cup of very strong tea often relieves this form of headache, but this remedy with not a few ispcrlloiiH, lor bringing relief from pnln, It may produce gen eral restlessness, and worst of all banish sleep. Turpentine In doses of 20 or HO minims given at intervals of an hour or two, will not only remove tho headache, but produco In a won derful manner that soothing lullucucc to which reference has been made. Ax intelligent correspondent ex presses In tho following paragraph a view which wo havo seen advanced by several good farmers ; "I am n decided advocate for milking cows un to calving if tho milk gets thick throw It away, but milk tho cow. Always glvo her to understand that giving milk is her business, and keop her nt it late and early. A cow that gives a moderate steady yield up to calvinir is far pref erable to ono that Is very flush lm- mediately after calving, and then dries up before slit months havo passed." British Wheat Cnor. From various reliable sources wo learn that tho wheat crop of Great Britain for 1871 fell considerable short of an nv crugo yield. The crop is short in weight, according to the Mark Lano Express, about two pounds per bush el which would reduce tho aggregate yield somo thing over two millions of bushels. When wo tako Into consid eration tho fact that Great lirltaln ordinarily imports for her own con sumption nn nvenigo of (11,000,000 bushels of wheat, It will bo seen that tho demand for this staplo grain the present year, will bo very lurge.larger than usual at least by moro than four millions of bushels reckoning in no Increase of tho consumption In tho kingdom. Postal. Postofllees havo been es tablished at North Bend, Coos county, and Kuappa, Clatsop county. Those at Herinansvllle, Coos county, and Salt river, Polk county, have been discontinued. William Nieol Hums, the Inst sur viving son of tho crreat Scottish noct. died recently nt the age of clghty- turco Ho had been a colonel In the service of the East India Company, but retired thirty years ago.
