"Let rac lay my Head In Mother's Lap."
BT ZDWAIUl XAJOH.
Tho follow ag lines were suggested by the pa
thetic circumstances attending tuo death of a youth
lu Salem, Oregon, Matter Vroom who was sud
denly stricken down by tho accidental discharge, of
! gun. While In tho last throw of death he iald:
" Let me lay my head In mother's lap,"
Let me rest my head, mother.
On thy lap awhile.
For I would hate you look once more
Upon your djlng child.
Kre the darkening shadows
ltklo thco from my sight,
I would rest my weary head
In thy lap to night.
Last rrentug as I lay, mother ,
In a pleasant dream,
Tho nngels gathered round me
llow happy thoy did seem ;
And, oh I such hca enly music ,
As floated through tho room,
Mother, I pracd that I might dwell
With them In their home.
My teachers w ell descned my loro,
And alt my schoolmates, too,
Hat j on, dear mother, more than all
II.ito been the one most true ;
But I must bid them all farctull
To Heat en I go from thee,
To dwell terctcr In that home
Oh ! w eep not then ror me.
Farewell, farewell, dear father,
And you, too, sister dear
Oh, mine has been a happy life
Of Joy and sunshine here ;
Dut now the angels call mo
From sin and sorrow free
Trust on, dear mother
I'll go and wait for thee.
Hark I listen to the nurds,
Their songs alluro mo on,
Then, mother, do not bid mo stay
Away from that bright home :
But you will often seek tho spot
And kneel beside my tomb,
And pray that wo may meet again
Ileyond this world of gloom.
Then, mother, let mo rest my head
Upon your lap awhile,
For I would have yon look oaco moro
Upon your dying child ;
Bro the darkening shadows
Hide thco from my sight,
Mother, I would rest my head
Upon your lap to-night.
"Tin: Twin Doltoiw,1' Is tho
firm nnino of ti couplo of tho most
graceless nnil inhumim si'tunns Unit
over linjKWtl upon poor, credulous
humanity. According to a report
uindo to tho Detroit Freo Press, two
nionsters.stylingtlioniselveaiianbovo
hrtvo been traveling in Macomb
county, Michigan, practicing tho so
called healing itrt In tho most atro
cious manner. In one instance they
attempted to .straighten tho leg of n
boy which had been drawn nearly
double by lnilammatory rheumatism,
by binding it to a board in a position
as much extended as their united
.strength could extend it In this
way thoy left tho youth over night,
tho victim frequently fainting from
tho pain inflicted. Finding in the
morning that nothing had been ac
complished, they proposed to sever
tho cords back of tho kneo, and wcro
only preventing from doing tills by
tho determined interposition of tho
mother of tho loy. Tito villains
persisted in saying that thoy could
have accomplished tho euro If left
freo to mako tho operation, and in
dignantly demanded tho foe, $2.r,
agreed upon. This was paid them
by tho father, who al.-o toltl them of
ncasoof "fever soro" some miles
away. To tho hoiiso of tho sufferer
thoy nimlo their way. They got tho
case. They wafehed tho soro with
gunpowder water, burned tho center
of it with a strong acid, and prepar
ed a red hot uecdlo to plnugo Into it,
but tho patient gavo them eleven
dollars to quit the case and leave the
houso. Furtheron thoy found u case
of soro eyes, to which they adminis
tered for$.ri, a wash, from tho direct
effects of which it seems likely tho
patient will Ioo his eyesight.' What
other barlttritiea "Tho Twins" prac
ticed are not yet recorded. They
were not arrested at last accounts,
but an effort to apprehend them was
Doing made. Hanging wouiu seem
too light a punMiment for such butch
ery. And what shall bo said of thoo
who wore tho dupes of tlieso rascals?
How find wortls to denounce tho
credulity, tho stupidity, tho Ignor
nnco that makes such practices pos
sible, in this land of newspapers and
free schools? We give up tho conun
drum In disgust. Prairie Iltrmer.
When a man has no design but to
sneak plain truth, ho may say a great
deal In a very narrow compass.
POMPEY'S CONSCIENCE.
Several years ago, in n New-England
village, might bo found a very
flourishing Congregational Church,
which was served by nn cltlcrly pas
tor of great worth and of unusual
ability us a preacher. It was as com
mon then as it is now uncommon, for
tho pastoral relation among thorn to
grow stronger with age, and not un
I'rcquentiy to last a Hie time. " Hut
times change, and wo chango with
them." tho Roman poot says ; and so
our old friend tho pastor found. Ho
was not at all disposed to yield up
his position ; although ho know from
cold looks of some, and averted faces
of old friends, members of his congre
gation, that ho ditl not stand so well
with tlio " now set," who had sprung
up in the room of their fathers.
"Coming events cast their shadow
before," and tho good man felt in his
bones that Ito was to sou trouble cro
long.
Matters came to n crisis in tho fol
lowing fashion: The malcontents had
for some tlnio been tlndlng fault
now with ills doctrines, which wcro
"old fogy," and "out of date;" now
with his sermons, which were "too
long," "too prosy," without Are, and
" not of a sort to touch tho heart ;"
again witli his mannor, which was
"cold." "too gravo and monoto
nous" to suit the young peoplo; In
fact, they had pretty much over
hauled everything that could bo
mado a handlo of, to get tho good
parson out of his congregation. And
no did not or would not pay any at
tention to what at last came to his
cars, through somo of tho gossips.
Finally thoy resolved to "bolt."
They had borno It as long ns they
could. They wouldn't endure it any
longer. They resolved on tho " next
Sabbath " to rise in a body and leave
"tho meeting."
They did so, and took a pretty
large proportion of tho congregation,
not all decidedly opposed to tlio par
son, but sovcral of tliem of that class
who nro ready to follow others to
good or ovil moro " wax noses."
no of those wns named Pompoy,
shortened into Pomp, which, lu fact,
suited well with his character; for
Pomp was a well-dres-ed negro on
Sunday, and folt himself "as largo
as any whito man." Pomp had
heard tlio conversations of ills whito
brethren, and had determined to bolt
with them, if titer should leave tho
comrreiratloii. And ho did.
Ah Pomp Joined tlio rclwls on tho
outside, they wero greatly taken
aback. Thoy did not evidently con
sider him of as much honor to their
movement, ns ho judged himself.
So one of them opened lire upon
hint:
" Pomp ! what tiro you doing out
hero V"
"Me, sah? I'so got tired of do
parson."
"Tired! What havo you to say
against hlniV"
"O nullln special agin do man, but
I do.zent Uko his teachings. Ills
sermon is too long ; I goes to sleep,
vo see. I likes soinfou more 'citing
like ; and, do fact Is. my conscience
won't let me sit any longer under his
prcachln."
" Conscience, Pomp ! That's too
good !"
'Yes, sah ! Can't tlio gemma n of
color nai) consnuns, l'so uko to
know?"
" Well, I 'sposo ho can, Pomp ; hut
what do you know about conscience?
What is conscience V"
" Consliuns ? I tink I knows what
conshuns is, Conshuns.snh I alicmt"
(Pomp hero drew himself up, put his
hand upon his breast, witli his lin
ger preyed in firmly, and with ills
eyes rolled up in a sanctimonious
fiHilon, said with great energy) :
"Conshuns-Is dal fertln in mini:,
what says won't. JhiV constuns,
sah."
Thero is a. great tleal In our day
which is said mid done under tho sa
cred tiamo of conscience, but when
reduced to its truo meaning, it is
nothing moro nor less limn that feel
ing within of sheer self-will, which
says emphatically, with eves raised
to heaven, hand uKn tho breast, and
finger pressed to tho heart, "I
won't." It's Pomp's conscience.
