Annual City-Wide Mall Challenge
Blood Drive Kicks Off
Four Portland Metropolitan malls are gearing up
for a little friendly competition during the American
Red Cross Cascades City-Wide Mall Challenge blood
drive, Friday, June 30 and Monday, July 3 between
9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the following locations:
• Clackamas Town Center (Community Room near
“Buckle”) Sponsor Code: mallchallenge
• Lloyd Center (2nd Level Vacant Storefront Center
of Mall near Torrid) Sponsor Code: LloydCenter-
Mall
• Washington Square (Vacant Storefront between
Apple Store and Abercrombie & Fitch) Sponsor
Code: WashingtonSquare
• Pioneer Place (Vacant Storefront Space 1053 Base-
ment Level next to Food Court) Sponsor Code: Pio-
neerPlacePDX
“Shoppers will have an opportunity for some big
savings in the way of lives with their blood donation,”
says Angel Montes, Regional Executive, American
Red Cross. “A single donation can help save more than
one life.”
Unfortunately, the American Red Cross often sees
blood supplies dwindle during summer months as
people head out of town. “When schools let out and
families set off on vacation, we typically see a decline
in donors, often leading to a seasonal blood shortage,”
Montes says.
Visit RedCrossBlood.org then enter the sponsor
code above for the mall of your choice and make your
appointment today.
The mall to collect the most blood donations will re-
ceive a trophy and bragging rights.

Bill Kombol Awarded Martin Luther
King Medal of Distinguished Service
King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn on
Tuesday awarded Bill Kombol with the Martin Luther
King Medal of Distinguished Service, an award that
recognizes individuals whose work has answered the
question asked by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “What
are you doing for others?”
Kombol has worked hard to protect and preserve
the history of his community and ensure its vitality
for future generations.
“I am pleased to honor Bill for his decades of service
to Southeast King County, particularly for his great
contributions to historic preservation,” Dunn said.
“Without him, many stories from the Enumclaw and
Black Diamond communities would have been for-
gotten and lost forever. Today we thank Bill for the
countless hours and passion he has poured into his
volunteerism.”
Kombol has spent much of his adult life seeking to
trace, document, and protect the history of his com-
munity, donating his free time to many local orga-

Society, the Enumclaw Plateau Historical Society, the
King County Centennial Commission, the King Coun-
