SLAMLANDIA: Slamlandia is a poetry open mic and slam which
meets on the second Thursday of each month. The mic provides
a space that is creative, fun, and welcoming to all literary com-
munities in Portland, and poets new and old are encouraged to
come share their work. Poets read their own poetry, witness
others, and participate in the community. From 7 – 9 p.m., Liter-

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10
THE AMERICAN SCENE: Portland Youth Philharmonic opens its
landmark 95th season with distinguished composer William
Grant Still’s “The Far West” from his larger suite The American
Scene. Known as “the Dean of African-American composers,”
William Grant Still envisioned a proudly multicultural America,
as harmonious in race and ethnic relations as his music. Tickets
start at $5. From 7:30 – 9 p.m., Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall,

TREEMENDOUS SECOND SATURDAY: Insects will crawl, fly, and
slither their way to the World Forestry Center Discovery Mu-
seum at this themed monthly event. Folks from the Portland
Insectarium will be at the museum with some of their creepy
crawly critters and a microscope on hand. $7 adults, $5 kids.

FREE SCULPT & PAINT WORKSHOP: Produce your very own
sculpture in air-dry clay! A two-person artist team, Anna Gray
and Ryan Wilson Paulsen, will help participants of all skill levels
to learn the basic hand-building and painting methods needed
to make a colorful sculpture. Come create new meaning for
historic museum artifacts through this free playful, hands-on

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12
PORTLAND VETERAN’s PARADE: The parade will begin at NE 40th
and Tillamook and end at the Ross Hollywood Flag Pole at Sandy
Boulevard and NE 48th Ave. There is covered seating for elders
available in front of Ross Hollywood Chapel at 48th and Sandy
Blvd. Starts at 9:30 a.m., free to attend, limited parking.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13
WRITER’S & POET’S WORKSHOP: 50 writers and poets gather to-
gether for literary discussions, critique groups, open mics, and
to listen to featured readers. Our writer’s workshop offers fo-
cused tracts for novelists, poets, speculative fiction, and more.
All skill levels, education levels, and intentions are welcome to

THE PINK WAVE, LESSONS FROM THE TRAIL: Dr. Melody Rose
will share her analysis of the mid-term election results and her
vision for the future of women’s rights. Dr. Rose has a Ph.D. in
Government from Cornell University and over 20 years of expe-

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14
EINSTEIN’S MONSTERS – THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BLACK HOLES: At
this Science on Tap, Dr. Chris Impey will talk about his new book
“Einstein’s Monsters” which presents the astonishing science of
black holes and their role in our universe. Impey will discuss
profound discoveries about black holes and how they inspire

lottery for securing wedding reservations in PP&R
parks between March 2019 and December 2019.
Future newlyweds can participate in the lottery to try
and secure their preferred location and date - or wait
until after Jan. 1, 2019 and place a reservation for any
locations, times, and dates available after the lottery

Wedding lottery registration will be from 8 a.m. Nov.
19 at through 5 p.m. Dec, 13 at 5 p.m. Applicants will
need to submit a wedding reservation request as part
of the process to enter the lottery. In the request, they
will need to provide basic contact information, provide
preferred location/date information, and pay a $117
non-refundable application fee.

POGO Presents Bilingual Production
of ‘The Barber of Seville’
Portland Op-

sini’s The Bar-
ber of Seville as
2018’s Portland
Opera to Go production. For almost 20 years, Port-
land Opera to Go has travelled throughout Oregon
and Washington with an opera adaptation targeted
for students. This year, POGO will present nearly
60 performances, in venues including school gyms,
libraries, cafeterias, classrooms and community cen-
ters.
In this adaptation of The Barber of Seville, aimed
at students in 3rd through 12th grades, Rosina is new
in town. Fresh from Spain, she lives with her con-
trolling, suspicious Uncle Bartolo, who is planning to
marry her off to one of his rich, elderly friends. But
Rosina is in love with Almaviva. She knows he likes
her too, but they have a problem – she speaks only
Spanish, and he speaks only English. They enlist the
help of the brilliant, bilingual Figaro, and hilarious
antics ensue.
Portland Opera to Go provides engaging, accessible
artistic educational programming in elementary and
middle schools, focusing on schools with economic
and geographic barriers to accessing fine arts expe-
riences. Over 50 percent of schools visited are Title
I and are located in rural communities. To integrate
the experience, POGO also provides in-class work-
shops and a 100+ page teacher’s guide, including cur-
riculum connections that highlight clear learning
goals and creative activities for students.
Tickets are on sale now for two public performanc-
es at the Hampton Opera Center on Dec. 8, 2018 and
Dec. 15, 2018.
In addition to touring to schools throughout the re-
gion, Portland Opera to Go will present the following

This performance will be interpreted in American
Sign Language and will also include a live audio de-
scription of the visual and physical events onstage

Jane Theater Company Presents
‘Robin Hood’
After a year off, Jane Theater Company will present
a brand new, original musical by Kim Bogus, Karen J.
Moore and Greg Paul. The musical – a spin on ‘Robin
Hood’ – tells the traditional story with a twist, with
Robin Hood presiding over a court case, Friar Tuck
as the court clerk, and a motley group of lawyers, wit-
nesses and sheep in tote.
Performances are free to attend, and will take place
at ComedySportz Portland on Saturdays and Sundays
(Dec. 1, 2, 8 and 9) at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Jane Theater Company was founded by artistic di-
rector Kim Bogus, who believes that every person
should have the opportunity to experience the magic
of live theater. When actor and audience meet; actor

Families of deployed military personnel also will be
given free admission.
To receive free admission Nov. 11-12, visitors must
show a military or veteran organization ID, discharge
papers or other official military identification; fami-
lies of deployed military personnel must show an ac-
tive duty ID.
In addition, the zoo gift shop and all zoo food out-
lets are offering a 10 percent discount for veterans,
active military personnel and their families, with
proper identification.
