OPENING RECEPTION: SELLING THE ROSE CITY: PORTLAND SOU-
VENIRS AND THE IMAGERY OF PLACE: This opening reception is
the first chance to view this exhibit, which invites the viewer to
take a step back to a time before selfie sticks and smart phones
were around. The March 2 opening will be held in conjunction
with the First Friday Eastside Art Walk. 6 p.m.

THE PORTLAND CHAPTER OF THE NAACP, THE NO HATE ZONE,
& PCC PRESENT: A FREE SCREENING: An A & E ORIGINAL DOCU-
MENTARY SERIES DIVIDED STATES: In this original documentary
series, A&E takes an in-depth look at how racial tensions and
hate crimes are impacting communities in the United States
and Europe, and how community members are confronting the

‘The Magic Play’ Makes West Coast Debut
Andrew Hinderaker’s stunning theatrical hybrid, “The Magic Play,” begins preview performances at The Armory on March 3, opens
on March 9 and runs through April 1 on the U.S. Bank Main Stage. The Armory’s production brings together the artistic team from
the celebrated world premiere at Goodman Theatre/Olney Theatre Center, including director Halena Kays; magic creator/actor Brett
Schneider; actor Sean Parris; master illusionist Jim Steinmeyer; scenic designer Lizzie Bracken, costume designer Alison Siple; aerial
choreographer Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi; and flying effects by ZFX, Inc. Portland Center State at The Armory’s run of The Magic Play
is a co-production with Actors Theatre of Louisville and Syracuse Stage. In “The Magic Play,” playwright Andrew Hinderaker mashes
these traditions together with alluring results. The Magic Play follows a young magician trying to get through a live show just hours
after his partner has left him. As the performance progresses, he confronts the fact that the spectacular tricks that impress people on
stage don’t serve him as well when it comes to building truthful personal relationships. This new play questions the extent to which

Black Voices United and Partnering
Groups Host Black Voices
Candidates Forum
Black Voices United, Portland African American
Leadership Forum, Black Parent Initiative, Marana-
tha Church, Northwest Skaters United, LoriBy De-
sygn and World Stage Theatre will co-host a Black
Voices Candidates Forum for both Multnomah Coun-
ty Commissioner, District 2 and City Council Commis-
sioner, Position 3 on March 24 beginning at 10 a.m. at
Maranatha Church located at 4222 NE 12th Avenue.
Candidates Maria Garcia, Susheela Jayapal, Bruce
Broussard and Sharon Maxwell have confirmed
their participation. These candidates are running
for Multnomah County Commissioner, District 2
currently occupied by Commissioner Loretta Smith.
This portion of the forum is scheduled for 10:00am to

to learn more about Port-
land’s commission form
of government and the
role of a county and city
commissioner. The spon-
soring nonpartisan orga-
nizations do not support
or oppose any of the can-
didates. Our objective is to inform and increase the
responsiveness of elected officials to issues affecting
their black constituents in pursuit of racial equity.
The forum is open to the public, offering free food
and free childcare, and will function in an authentic
forum format where candidates answer questions
from a moderator but do not directly engage with
each other.
The moderators, Chabre Vickers and CJ Robbins,
will provide each candidate an opportunity to brief-
ly address the audience, and then they each will be
asked a series of questions. Members of the audience
will then have an opportunity to ask additional ques-
