ODOT Seeks Public Input on
Proposed Projects
The 47th Annual State Chess
Tournament, Hosted by Chess for
Success
The annual state chess tournament is Friday March 14
through Saturday March 15 at the Oregon Convention Cen-
ter. The tournament begin at 9 a.m. and last until roughly 5
p.m. It is located at the South Entrance in exhibit hall “E.”
Nearly 600 children travel from all over the state of Oregon
to compete for the title, the trophy, and the test of abilities
at the 47th Annual State Chess Tournament. Like most
sports, chess is a competition; there are those who win and
those who do not. However, The State Chess Tournament
provides an opportunity for regional qualifiers to compete
in something truly unique; a test of athletics for the mind.
The State Chess Tournament is an opportunity for children
to exercise their brains and compete for both individual and
team titles.

ODOT plans three public meetings in March to discuss
the Draft 2015-2018 Statewide Transportation Improve-
ment Program for the Portland area.
The STIP is Oregon’s transportation capital improvement
program, which identifies the schedule and funding for
transportation projects. It includes projects for federal,
state, city and county transportation systems including
highways, rail, public transit, bicycles and pedestrian.
In the meetings, ODOT is seeking public comment on the
proposed projects in 2016-2018.
Here’s the meeting schedule:
Saturday, March 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. East Portland Com-
munity Center, Multi-Purpose Room 3, 740 S.E. 106th
Ave., Portland.
Tuesday, March 18, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., ODOT Region 1

Various materials, with details of the proposed projects,
will be available online and at many public libraries
throughout the Portland area, Mount Hood and the Colum-
bia River Gorge.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation picked the Urban League of Portland as its latest
Neighborhood Builders winner, handing out a $200,000 unrestricted grant as well as advanced
leadership training. Urban League President and CEO Michael Alexander said last week the money will
be used to increase the Urban League’s job training and employment support programs. For more on

The event will include workshops on rain-friendly land-
scaping, bicycle basics, gardening with children, raising
chickens, eco-roofs, computer maintenance, basic plumb-
ing and wiring, tree planting, composting, nature-scaping,
sheetrock repair and potential risks of radon, mold and
lead.
Environmental Services is sponsoring the event in coop-
eration with other county departments, local businesses,
organizations and agencies. Lunch will be provided to the
first 100 people and a garage heater will be given away as
a door prize.

Linfield Hosts Exclusive Lincoln Exhibit
Linfield College has been selected to host the confer-

ence “The Political Thought of Abraham Lincoln” and the
traveling exhibit “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil
War.”
The exhibit, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil
War,” will be featured in Jereld R. Nicholson Library April
2-May 16. The exhibit explores how Lincoln used the Con-
stitution to confront three intertwined crises of the war —
the secession of Southern states, slavery and wartime civil
liberties.
In addition to the opening of the exhibit, Leon Litwack,
professor of American history emeritus at University of
California, Berkeley, will speak at the opening ceremony
for the exhibit on Thursday, April 3. Ron White, author of
“A. Lincoln: A Biography,” will be the second speaker in
conjunction with the Lincoln Exhibit on Tuesday, April 15.
