Symposium at Lewis & Clark

Chescaleigh, the YouTube sensation behind “Sh*t White
Girls Say...to Black Girls” will be a featured speaker at the
33rd annual Gender Studies Symposium at Lewis & Clark,
March 5-7; all events are free and open to the public.
Franchesca Ramsey (aka Chescaleigh), actress, comedian
and video blogger seen on MSNBC, ABC, Ebony Maga-
zine, The Daily Mail, and Anderson Cooper speaks on
“Your Powerful Online Voice: Using Social Media for
Social Change” March 7, at 7 p.m. at the Agnes Flanagan
Chapel.
Other keynote speakers include: France Winddance
Twine, professor, ethnographer, feminist theorist, and criti-
cal race theorist—”The Sexual Life of Soldiers: The
Circularity of Violence in a Masculine Institution” March 5,
at 7 p.m.; and Christina B. Hanhardt, who studies LGBT
activism against violence in the context of broader debates
about gentrification, policing, and crime—”No Safe
Spaces: Violence and Gentrification in LGBT Activist His-

Emerging Young Leaders Summit
McDonald’s regional Crew Person of the Year Award has gone to Beaverton franchise employee

Officials said Banks, a six-year employee, has consistently been rated as an outstanding crew

‘Do It Yourself’ Fair Helps Save
Money, Live Green
A group of community partners will sponsor an educa-
tional fair next weekend to help local families learn skills
and techniques to save money and prevent pollution.
The Green Neighbors Do-It-Yourself Fair will run 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in Gaiser Hall at Clark Col-
lege, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way.
The event will include workshops on rain-friendly land-
scaping, bicycle basics, gardening with children, raising
chickens, eco-roofs, computer maintenance, basic plumb-
ing and wiring, tree planting, composting, nature-scaping,
sheetrock repair and potential risks of radon, mold and

lead.
The fair will include exhibits from local agencies and
companies.
Clark Public Utilities will sponsor a compact fluorescent
bulb exchange. Each person can drop off unbroken, burned-
out bulbs and receive up to six new bulbs. No fluorescent
tubes or fixtures will be accepted.
Environmental Services is sponsoring the event in coop-
eration with other county departments, local businesses,
organizations and agencies. Lunch will be provided to the
first 100 people and a garage heater will be given away as
a door prize.

The Zeta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. and PINK Ivy Foundation host middle school
girls and boys at the 2014 Emerging Young Leaders Sum-
mit, Beyond Blurred Lines, “Planning a ‘CLEAR’ Path for
Your Life” on Saturday, March 8, at Concordia University
from 9 a m. – 3:30 p.m.
The summit will offer young adults the tools to see
beyond the ‘blurred lines’ as they encounter daily chal-
lenges, by helping them to develop clear and concise goals
and objectives for making sound decisions as they mature
in age.
The EYL Youth Summit features workshops and forums
that are intended to excite, equip and connect middle school
students. Please distribute the attached registration form to
those interested students who would benefit from this pro-
gram and who meet the criteria below:
*Student is enrolled at a Middle School
*Student must have a C+ grade point average, or its
equivalent
*Student has not been suspended or expelled
