King Boulevard Center
Meals on Wheels Hosts 8th
Annual Jambalaya Festival
Labor Day is Crunch Time
for the Red Cross—Donors
Desperately Needed
Meals on Wheels People Martin Luther
King, Jr. Center will host the eighth annual
Summer in September Jambalaya Festival
& BBQ sponsored by New Seasons Market
Saturday, Sept. 7, from noon to 6 p.m. at
Dawson Park. Live musical entertainment
will be featured all day as well as dance les-
sons by the Cascade Zydeco Club.
The menu includes authentic Creole-style
jambalaya (a non-seafood version is avail-
able) or BBQ Ribs, along with bread, salad,
beverage, dessert. A beer garden sponsored
by Widmer Brothers Brewing will be fea-
tured this year. Cost is $15 for adults or $45
for a family ticket for four. Tickets are avail-
able in advance at mealsonwheelspeople
.org, from the center or at the event. Meals
are available for take-out.
The event features a Past-Present-Future
exhibit of Black History with presentations
by the Oregon Historical Society and Roo-
sevelt High School on topics ranging from
freedom fighters to Portland’s lost black
neighborhoods. Also featured at the event
are backpacks filled with school supplies
for the first 150 attendees.
Dawson Park is located between N.
Williams and N. Vancouver and Morris and
Stanton Streets across from Emanuel Hospi-
tal. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center is located
at 5325 NE MLK Blvd. in Portland. For
more information, call David Lomax at 503-
953-8207.
With the arrival of Labor Day and the
unofficial end to summer, the American Red
Cross encourages eligible donors to roll up
a sleeve and give blood or platelets to help
ensure sufficient supplies over the holiday
weekend.
Those who present to donate between
Aug. 26 and Sept. 9 could win one of five
$1,000 American Express gift cards, and all
donors will walk away with the instant grat-
ification that they may be helping to save
more than one life.
While thousands of people answered the
call for blood and platelet donations issued
by the Red Cross earlier this summer, an
urgent need remains for platelets and types
O negative, A negative and B negative
blood. The summer months can be especial-
ly difficult to collect enough blood and
platelet donations to keep pace with patient
needs.
To help spur additional donations over the
Labor Day weekend, all presenting blood
and platelet donors between Aug. 31 and
Sept. 2 will also receive a complimentary
Red Cross T-shirt. Live a story. Give a story.
Donate blood or platelets. Call 1-800-RED
CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcross-
blood.org/summer for more information and
to make an appointment to help save lives.

Cat Month
All over the region, animal shelters have too many cats.
That’s why staff at the Multnomah County Animal Services is offering a
special discount for cat lovers to make sure the shelter’s fabulous felines
find wonderful homes.
“Simply put, we are taking in more cats than are being adopted out and
we’re out of space,’’ said Animal Services director Mike Oswald. “Our
adoption placement partners are experiencing similar scenarios and are
limited in how many cats they can accept from us right now.”That’s why
County Animal Services is offering a “Name Your Price” adoption special
for cats. The deal is good until the shelter’s cat population reaches a
more sustainable level (dogs are not included) – keeping in mind “kitten
season” usually lasts through August.
As many as 30 additional cats and kittens arrive at the shelter everyday
– and at Portland’s only open door shelter, stray cats and kittens are
never turned away.
