Partnership for Housing
Portland Y.O.U.th
Summit Feb. 7 at PSU
Youth Organized and United to Help
(Y.O.U.th) focuses this year’s Portland
Youth Summit on families building their
mind, body and soul.
The event is Saturday, Feb. 9, with regis-
tration at 11 a.m., daylong events and a
youth talent show at 6:30 p.m. It’s at Port-
land State University Smith Memorial
Union, 3rd Floor, 825 SW Broadway, Port-
land
The theme is, “Be Healthy or Die Try-
ing,” acknowledging that racial disparities
can lead to obesity, substance abuse,
teenage pregnancy, and other education
health and social problems.
This year, both youth and adults are wel-
come and encouraged to attend the exercise
workshop Soulfly Groovment, which will
feature a workout CD produced by rapper
and activist stic.man from the political hip-
hop duo Dead Prez. This workshop will
teach the necessity for meditation, holistic
health, and natural body movements.
Another workshop will address mental
health and the societal stereotypes and
resources for families.
The additional workshops topics vary
from social justice, youth and leadership
empowerment, and metaphysics. On Satur-
day night, a Youth Talent Show, featuring
rappers, dancers and singers, will be hosted
by Vursatyl, an MC from the Portland hip
hop group Lifesavas.

The Portland Public Schools has
announced its plans to close another school
in Jefferson Cluster in North and Northeast
Portland, and the group Portland Area
Social Equality Educators is holding a rally
Saturday, Jan. 26 at noon at Jefferson High
School, just before a school board meeting
on “rebalancing” strategies which is slated
for 1 p.m. inside Jefferson.
Last year, two schools, Tubman and Hum-
bolt, were fast-tracked for closure. Critics
charge that the district’s transfer policy has
created a segregated school system, and “its
plans for ‘balancing’ the cluster will only
intensify this problem.”
Felicia Tripp (third from right) accepts a $50,000 check from Wells Fargo
on behalf of the Portland Housing Center (PHC). Representing Wells Fargo
are, left to right: branch manger Angelique Newman, District Manager
Michele Givens, Community Affairs Manager Bernie Kronberger, Diverse
Segments Consultant Manuel Delgadillo, Community Development
Officer Cobi Jackson, Area President Kellie Grant and Regional President
Don Pearson. The PHC will use the funds to create a public-private
partnership that will make home ownership a reality for more low- to
moderate-income Portland families. Jackson chairs the PHC board.
