Services Aug. 4
The Compassion NORTH+PORTLAND
free medical and dental clinic is Saturday,
Aug. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Roo-
sevelt High School, 6941 North Central
St. Services include: MEDICAL: Routine
medical examinations, immunizations,
medication, consultations with pharmacists,
youth sports physicals, diabetic foot care;
DENTAL SERVICES: Dental exams,
cleaning, emergency treatment, extractions,
fillings and simple denture repairs; includ-
ing a free single-tooth denture made onsite;
OPTICAL: Eye exams, free glasses and
eye glass repair; and haircuts. Information
will also be available about social services.
There will be children’s activities and a free
meal provided.

23rd Annual Home
Paint and Repair-a-Thon
REACH Community Development, a
local nonprofit affordable housing develop-
er, will join together with 250 community
volunteers at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4 at
Patton Square Park (N. Interstate and N.
Emerson Ave.) to provide free home repairs
for low income seniors and disabled Port-
landers.
The 23rd Annual Paint & Repair-a-thon
will revitalize 20 homes in North and
Northeast Portland, providing critical
repairs including plumbing, electrical, car-
pentry and basic health-safety. For more

Race Talks
The popular Race Talks series continues
with a screening of “Race: The Power of an

Illusion, Part 3”, introduced by Dr. James
Mason, executive director of culturally
competent caregiving for Providence
Health. After the film, the audience will
break into discussion groups, facilitated by
volunteers from Uniting to Understand
Racism. Event is free and open to all ages.

Ceasefire Oregon Gun
Turn-In
On Aug.18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., citi-
zens may turn in unwanted firearms at a gun
turn-in at the Memorial Coliseum at the
North Benton Parking Lot, 300 North Win-
ning Way in Portland’s Rose Quarter.
Gun owners will receive a $75 Fred Meyer
gift card for turning in a working gun (limit
3 gift cards but gun owners may turn in
more than three guns). Inoperable guns, BB
guns and pellet guns may be exchanged for
a $5 Burgerville gift card. All firearms must
be unloaded and stored in the trunk of your
car. No questions asked.
Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation
has collected more than 7,500 weapons
since 1994. All weapons collected are melt-
ed
down.

Salem Police Accepting
Applications for Citizen
Police Academy
Salem Police Department’s 29th Citizen
Police Academy will begin on September 5,
2012 for a period of 14 weeks, ending on
December 5, 2012. Classes will be limited
to 20 students and will involve Wednesday
evening classes as well as three Saturday

turned out for the four-hour prayer gathering, organized by the church-
led Eleven:45 movement. Set up last year to work for an end to youth
violence, Eleven:45 brings together more than six churches to create a
combined movement across denominations.

Successful applicants must be at least 18
years of age, have a valid driver’s license,
have no felony convictions, no misde-
meanor arrests within 12 months prior to the
Academy and must live or work within the
City of Salem. The course is free.
