The keynote is Shelley Gunton,
co-founder of “Top Dog” pet food
company, chair of Angel Oregon,
and newly appointed Executive
Director at PSU's Innovation and
Entrepreneurship Center.
“Microenterprises” comprised
of fewer than five employees
make up 86 percent of all regis-
tered businesses in Oregon,
employing 16 percent of the entire
workforce, according to the US
Department of Commerce. At
times when many are hit hard by
the economy, these passionate
small business owners continue to
grow jobs and enrich local neigh-
borhoods. For example, Ruby
Jewel Treats has grown from an
ice cream stand at the Portland
Farmer's Market to a storefront
with product distribution in eleven
states. The People's Yoga recently
opened a new location in SE Port-
land, and popular watering hole
Dig A Pony has directly created 26
jobs since opening in 2011. These
local businesses have all recently
received assistance from BOP
consultants and PSU student
teams.

Centers Seeks
Drivers Memorial
Day Weekend
Loaves & Fishes Centers, The
Meals-On-Wheels People is seek-
ing volunteer drivers to ensure
homebound seniors receive nutri-
tious meals and a bit of
companionship this Memorial
Day weekend.
“These volunteers are invalu-
able because they not only help us
feed our frail elderly, but they
make sure these seniors see a
friendly face every day,” said Car-
oline Henry, who manages Loaves
& Fishes Centers’ Weekend and
Holiday meal program. “Some-
times the Meals-On-Wheels driver
is the only persons these home-
bound seniors see in a given day.
Holiday volunteers also help fill
routes left by our regular drivers
who vacation for the Memorial
Day weekend.”
Volunteer drivers are needed on
Saturday, Sunday and Monday,

36 meal sites in Multnomah,
Washington and Clark counties

Aging & Memory
in the African
American
Community
Conference
June 2
The Aging & Memory in the
African American Community
conference is the third conference
organized by PreSERVE Coalition
and will be held at University of
Portland’s Buckley Center from 9
a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This year’s
event will offer presentations and
workshops featuring the latest
research on factors that contribute
to the development of memory
loss and dementia; methods to
delay or prevent memory loss; and
techniques for healthy aging in the
African American community.
The conference will also focus
on how to take the message of a
healthier lifestyle and healthy
brain out into the community. An
afternoon workshop will provide
an opportunity for attendees to
discuss ideas to engage their com-
munities in this effort.
Keynote speaker, Monica Park-
er, MD, Assistant Professor in the
Department of Medicine, Division
of Geriatric Medicine and Geron-
tology at Emory University in
Atlanta, Georgia, will provide
valuable examples as she shares
how she and her team in Atlanta
engaged community members in
health-promoting activities and
increased awareness of the impor-
tance of minority involvement in
research.

dinner and auction May 12, 2012

is $25 per person. Proceeds will be
used to pay the fines of Right 2
Dream Too and to fund Right to
Survive projects.
The Night of Dreams will fea-
ture buffet style dinner, auction
items, educational and awareness
material on the houseless commu-
nity. Right to Survive brings
together homeless people and
their allies working to ensure that
everyone has the right to sleep, the
right to shelter, the right to self
support, the right to safety, the
right to simple living, the right to
sustainability, the right to sit and
lie, the right to share and barter
and the right say so! Right 2
Dream Too exists to awaken social
and political groups to the impor-
tance of safe and undisturbed
sleep, and to create a place where
unhoused people can rest or sleep
without being rousted by police or
private security, and without being
under the constant threat of vio-
lence. The aim is to create a
cost-effective,
self-sustaining
model that can be replicated else-
