COMMUNITY NEWS BRIEFS
Groundwork Portland and the Muslim Commu-
nity Center of Portland (MCC) host a special
event to help enhance urban food sites and
improve stormwater management in low-income
and minority neighborhoods in North and North-
east Portland.
The River Rally Service Project will convene on
Sunday, May 6, at the Seeds of Understanding
farm, 5325 N. Vancouver Ave., from 12:30 to 5
p.m.
Participants will remove invasive weeds, install
rain barrels, plant fruit trees and berry vines, con-
struct an eco-roof kiosk, and build raised garden
beds at two locations: the MCC-owned Seeds of
Understanding urban farm and Groundwork Port-
land facilitated Emerson Street Garden, located at
822 NE Emerson Street.

STEM Education: Pipeline
to Productivity
The fastest growing career fields all need grad-
uates with skills in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math: also known as the STEM
subjects. In fact, Mike Green, co-founder of the
America21 Project that seeks to build wealth in
urban communities calls STEM education Black
America’s Pipeline to Productivity.
But many students and parents don’t know
much about the kinds of careers available and
what students should do to prepare for these
valuable, high-paying jobs. That’s why the
Urban League’s Young Professionals are holding
the first of a series of “STEMinars,” this Friday
to tell students how they too can get into the
pipeline to productivity.
Parents and students are invited to attend and
learn more about the exciting careers. The event
is free and you don’t need to register. Simply
show up to hear from young professionals who
already work in STEM professions. Urban
League of Portland’s Young Professional’s
STEMINAR set for 6pm Friday, April 27 at Jef-
ferson High School. Pizza dinner included.
