Talent competition auditions begin April
20, and registration is now open for the
Portland Parks & Recreation Portland Teen
Idol local student talent contest auditions
for Season 6.
Portland Teen Idol offers finalists cash
prizes and spots on a summer performance
tour. Several former Portland Teen Idol con-
testants have gone on to success on FOX
television’s smash hit, American Idol.
Portland Teen Idol Season 3 (2009) final-
ists Aubrey Cleland and Madison Shanley
made American Idol’s top 100.
Beaverton teen Haley Johnsen, who made
this season’s American Idol top 24, has
committed to joining Portland Teen Idol
program as a judge.
The first open auditions for 2012 will be
held Friday, April 20, 6:30-9 p.m. at
PP&R’s University Park Community
Center, 9009 N Foss Ave, 503-823-3631;
and Saturday, April 21, 9 a.m. at PP&R’s Mt
Scott Community Center, 5530 SE 72nd
Ave, 503-823-3183.
Additional dates are expected to be
announced soon, along with auditions for
Spanish-language singers and stand-up
comedians.
Teens that sign up in advance online at
www.PortlandTeenIdol.com will get priori-
ty over drop-ins. Therefore, contestants are

April 15 advance registration deadline.

Rob Ingram Youth
Summit April 21
Performance artists, “Up and Over,” will
headline the entertainment at the Rob
Ingram Youth Summit Against Violence, set
for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 21 at Highland
Christian Center 7600 N.E. Glisan Street.
“Up and Over,” are a group of artists and
performers who tell real life stories of over-
coming the odds. They include rapper, Zeke
“Yung Mil” Jones; the hip hop ladies of
Rose Bent; Mathias “Mighty” Mauk; One
Kehleo; and the New Zoo Boyz as well as
founder Javonnie Shearn.
Up and Over, who currently are touring
high schools and youth centers in the North-
west, will perform during the lunch break.
The morning session will feature a panel of
youth speakers and break out groups. After
lunch, youth will offer testimony to invited
adults, who will include Mayor Sam
Adams, County chair Jeff Cogen, school
leaders and elected officials.
The 12 youth commissioners are high
school students from around the Portland-
metro region. They already have conducted
16 focus groups with young people to gath-
er information for the summit.
They went to schools and youth centers,
where they heard that violence is a real and
