Wanted: More Women

The Oregon Commission for Women
(OCFW), hosts Women at the Table, part of
a statewide effort led by the Governor’s
office to grow the number of Oregon
women
serving
on
Boards
and
Commissions.
The event is Nov. 10 from 4:30-6 p.m. at
the Multnomah County Building, 501 SE
Hawthorne, Room 635.
Speakers
include
Portland
City
Commissioner Amanda Fritz, and Kendall
Clawson, director of executive appoint-
ments at the governor’s office.
This is one of the first in a series of talks
about this issue around the state.

Steven Wax, a federal public defender, who
has represented Guantanamo detainees;
David Fidanque, of the ACLU of Oregon;
Kayse Jama, of the Center for Intercultural
Organizing; Steven Goldberg an attorney
whose litigation successfully challenged
the NSA warrantless surveillance program,
and Brandon Mayfield, the local Muslim
attorney who was falsely accused and
imprisoned on terrorism charges. Jo Ann
Hardesty, (formerly Jo Ann Bowman) will
moderate the discussion.

a back seat to the ‘War on Terror’ as succes-
sive U.S. administration’s scramble to pre-
vent further attacks on the nation.
Advocates say the whole point of American
democracy is to protect the very freedoms
and rights that now are threatened by our
own government.
Celebrated public defender Stephen Wax

Science will induct Dr. Wanda M. Austin,
president and CEO of The Aerospace
Corporation, into the Denice Dee Denton
Women Engineers Hall of Fame. The
Denton Award honors outstanding women
who can serve as role models for future
female engineers.
