National Night
Out at PCC
Portland
Community
College and the Humboldt
Neighborhood Association
are joining forces to throw a
National Night Out celebra-
tion 4-8 p.m., Thursday,
Aug. 11, Borthwick Mall,
Cascade Campus, 705 N.
Killingsworth St.
The celebration has some-
thing to offer for visitors of
all ages. Good stuff to eat
and drink will be available,
and for the kids, there will
be fun, games, face paint-
ing, hands-on art activities
and a drawing for two chil-
dren’s
bicycles.
Representatives from a
range of campus academic
programs will be on hand
with demonstrations, and
information also will be
available for those visitors
who are interested in attend-
ing classes at the campus.
The featured performer

for this year’s festivities
will be a longtime Portland
favorite - Ghanaian master
drummer Obo Addy and his
ensemble, Okropong.
Healthy Babies
Symposium
“We Speak Baby: Healthy
Pregnancy and Parenting,”
is the next free healthy liv-
ing symposium from Kaiser
Permanente
Northwest,
Saturday, Aug. 13, from
8:30 a.m. to Noon, at the
Portland
Community
College Willow Creek cam-
pus, 241 SW Edgeway Dr.,
Beaverton.
The keynote presentation
is titled “Seven tips for
ensuring you have a healthy
baby,” by Dr. Suzanne
Lubarsky, a Kaiser Perma -
nente perinatologist. Other
presentations
include
“Eating for two: good nutri-
tion during pregnancy,” and
“Nature’s way: the benefits
o
m
m
u
of breastfeeding and going
screen free.”
This is the third install-
ment
in
Kaiser
Permanente’s healthy living
symposium series. The
fourth, titled “Living suc-
cessfully with diabetes,”
will be held October 29 at
Clark College in Vancouver.
All symposiums will
include clinical consulta-
tions, educational resources,
and updates on the latest in
medical research. A compli-
mentary healthy breakfast
will be provided.

Park.
Lents is one of Portland’s
most diverse neighbor-
hoods. According to the
2010 Census, the neighbor-
hood is 60 percent white, 16
percent Latino, 14 percent
Asian and 4.5 percent black.
Free African, Mexican
and American food will be
offered; the event will fea-
ture music and dance per-
formances from China,
Mexico, Russia, Indonesia
and more.
The events start at 3:30
p.m. with a parade through
Lents; food and music at
Lents Park starts at 4:30
p.m. Food will be served
again at sundown for those
recognizing Ramadan dur-
ing the month of August.
Activities for the family
include a bounce house, a
soccer kick competition,
arts and crafts, story time,
clowns, face painting, a
photo booth, and more.
