After his report, the tart-
tongued Harriman talked with
newsmen in the White House
lobby.
Was he 'hopeful" about a Lao
tian settlement, a newsman
asked.
"Everybody always asks me
that," said Harriman. "That
(hopeful) isn't a word that's in
my vocabulary."
But, he added, the civil war
in Laos has been transferred
from the battlefield to the po
litical arena and it will "be
there for gomtptime to come, I
think.".

a written reply to Kennedy's

waii alone, said she had only
one hours' fuel left when she
landed.
"I should have had three

Looking fresh, Mrs. Miller
- opened the cockpit door of
her twin-e n g i n e d Piper
Apache and yelled to wel

feel?"
Her Hawaii trip was the
first leg of her planned solo
flight to Brisbane, Australia,
a 7,100-mile ocean-spanning
trip that will include stops at
Canton Island and Fiji. She
is flying a reverse course
taken by Amelia Earhart in
1937 when she and her navi
gator Fred Noonan disap
peared without trace while
attempting to fly the Pacific.
"I would Just love to have
a drink," the aviatrix said.
She complained that someone
in Oakland goofed before her
departure and filled her
thermos with boiling water.
Mrs. Miller said she will
rest in Honolulu for "a day
or two" before continuing to
Canton Island. She had been
expected to continue thu
flight after refueling in Hon
olulu. '

Irian.

The peaceful transfer ended
13 years -of struggle by Indo

miles of jungles and mountains

icy of erasing traces of Indo
nesia s former Dutcn masters,
West New Guinea was renamed
West Irian (Hot Land). Hollan

Dirksen of Illinois Wednesday
called the Middle East situation
"explosive and dangerous" and
said it holds the threat of a
third. world war.
Dirksen thus added his voice
to bipartisan expressions of
fear of possible Arab aggression
against Israel. .
"If we expect to maintain
peace and to prevent a war
erupting in the Middle East, as
is always a threat, we are going
to have to monitor the situa
tion very carefully;" Dirksen
said in an interview.
"You cannot permit the situa
tion to drift too long, because
drift is always dangerous," he
added.
Sen. Jacob K. Javits, R-N.Y.,
who spearheaded a flood of
Senate speeches Tuesday de
manding U.S. intervention, pre
dicted there will be increased
pressure "for a change in our
policy of drift."
Javits proposed, among other
things, that the United States
attempt to get Britain, France,
and other Western nations to
join it in a collective defense
agreement with Israel. He
warned that "time is running
out on peace in the Middle
East."
His speech set off bipartisan
appeals for this and other U.S.
action, including a call by Sen.
Hubert Humphrey of Minne
sota, assistant Democratic
leader, for an embargo on arms
shipments to the Middle East
and stronger U.N. peace-keeping
operations.
The speeches were arranged
in informal consultation to give
emphasis to pressure on the
administration.
Javits and other speakers ac
cused the Soviet Union of pour
ing guns, tanks, planes and ship
into Egypt to reequip President
Gamal Abdel Nasser's armiea
and of using every opportunity
to stir up the Arabs because of
Israel's commitment to th
West.
Humphrey declared that tha
increased buildup of arms in
the Middle East is "a loaded
pistol pointed at the heart of
all humanity" and represents
"a lighted fuse which could
ignite nuclear war."
Humphrey proposed an em
bargo on arms shipments to the
area coupled with a regional
arms control agreement, a larg
er U.N. peacekeeping force, and
the assignment of U.N. observ
ers throughout the Middle East.
Sen. Clifford Case, R-NJ., pic
tured U.S. policy as one of
"wishful waiting" in the hops
the problem would go away.
The United States, Case de
clared, should make clear "tha
threat to Israel's security will
be met in full measure by U.S.
assistance."
Sen. John Pastore, D-R.I.,
warned that an armed clash be
tween Israel and Arab states
"would involve us" and might
set off a world war.

money into Egypt to establish
the United Arab Republic as a
