Churches Plan Special Programs
A Christmas tree, a floral
cross and numerous programs
with Easter recitations, music
and programs by church or
Sunday school students are
planned Sunday in the Eugene-Springfield
area and
throughout the Emerald Em
pire. The Christmas tree is the
one used during the Decem
ber holiday season at First
Baptists Church, 1175 G St.,
Springfield.
In the period between
Christmas and Easter, when
the church observes Lent ir.d
the suffering of Christ, the
trees dries and sheds its
needles.
But on Easter Sunday, it
will acquire new branches and
decorations, symbolizing, the
Musical Easter
Worship Scheduled
Residents of Eugene, Springfield and a number of other
Emerald Empire communities will have a wide choice of Easter
music programs, concerts and contatas Sunday.
"Music and the Message of Easter" will be the theme of a
concert of sacred and Gospel hymns Sunday at First Baptist
Church, Broadway and High Streets, Eugene.
The progrsm, open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.
Selections by the church's sanctuary choir of 45-voices and
by music ensembles from the church's music department will be
accompanied by narration of the Easter story from the New
Testament.
Emerald Baptist Church's adult choir Sunday will present
the cantata, "A Celebration of Easter," at 7 p.m. at the church,
19th Avenue and Patterson Streets, Eugene.
Springfield Christian Church, 418 A St., Springfield, has
scheduled an Easter musicale for Sunday at 6 p.m. The pro
gram will include selections by the church's three choirs:
Chancel (adult) choir, Chorister (juniors) and Carol (primary)
Choir.
The 35-voice choir of First Evangelical United Brethren
Church, 834 Monroe St., Eugene, will present the cantata, "No
Greater Love" by John Peterson, Sunday at 7 p.m. at the
church.
A 20-voice choir from Willakenzio E. U. B. Church, 260
Willakenzie Rd., will present
cantata, Sunday at 11 a.m.
"Christ Triumphant," a cantata by John F. Wilson, will be
given Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Eugene Salvation Army Corps,
640 W. Seventh Ave., Eugene.
This year's Easter cantata at Fairfield Church of the Naz
arene, 1052 Fairfield St., Eugene, will be "The Glory of the
Cross by Rosemary Hadler.
At the same program, the church's junior high school group
will present a play.
And Lighthouse Temple, 1209 Olive St., has scheduled an
Easter Musicale Sunday at 7 p.m. at the church.
In the Emerald Empire, many church choirs have been
practicing special cantatas or anthems in preparation for
Easter.
"Hallelujah! What a Saviour!" by John W. Peterson will
bo the cantata presented Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Church
of Christ at Sixth and Gibbs Avenues in Cottage Grove.
The choir of Creswell Church of Christ will present a spe
cial Easter service Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
A cantata, directed by Elda Lowman, will be given Sunday
at 7:30 p.m. during the regular evening service hour at Elmira
Church of Christ.
Another cantata, "The Victorious Christ," will be given
Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Assembly of God, First and Laurel
Streets, Florence, by the church choir. Also on the evening
program will be a color film, "A Light Shines in the Dark
ness." Florence Christian Church, at Second and Ivy Streets, has
scheduled a concert Sunday at 7 p.m. at the church.
A 30-minute choir cantata will be given Sunday at 10:15
a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, Star Route Box 37-B,
Oakridge.
Olivet Baptist Church at Veneta will have an hour-long
"evening of song" Sunday, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The cantata, "Hosanna," will be given Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
at Yoncalla Church of Christ, Second and B Streets, by the
church choir.

For one congregation, bt.
Mark's Catholic Church on Echo
Hollow Road, the services will
be held in the building after a
long wait one caused by a fire
last September when the then
nearly-completed building was
gutted.
For the other congregation,
Wesley Methodist Church, serv
ices will mark another step in
the church's gradual expansion
to serve Methodists in the Wil
lakenzie area.
Both new church buildings
are of modern architectural de
sign. The St. Mark's building, first
in a planned complex of struc
tures to serve the new parish,
features an unusual roofline
and extensive use of natural
materials.
Pastor C. J. Linehan said Eas
ter services will be a Low Mass
at 8 a.m. and a High Mass with
music by the adult choir at 10
a.m.
St. Mark's is Eugene's fourth
Roman Catholic parish. An

new $100,000 sanctuary early
last summer. Stafford, Morin
and Longwood, of Eugene, were
architects for the project.
The sanctuary, shown above,
is located on the corner of Oak
way and Cal Young Roads adja
cent to the church's existing
parish hall. It will seat 350 per
sons in the s: nctuary. .
Wesley's services will begin
with a joint sunrise Easter serv
ice at 6 a.m. at Armitage Park,
with members of Coburg
Methodist Church participating.
Speaker for this service will
be Lt Col. Hal Brazier, U.S. Air
Force. This will be followed at
7:30 a.m. by a breakfast at the
Eugene church.
At 9:30 a.m., the congrega
tion will worship in the new
sanctuary for the first time. A
second, and identical, Easter
service is scheduled at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Luis Bove, pastor,
said a service including bap
tism, reception of new members
and confirmation is scheduled
Sunday at 3 p.m.

'Road to Calvary'
Pageant to Be
Offered Sunday
Three performances of the
pageant, "The Road to Calvary,"
will be given Sunday at First
Assembly of God, 1330 Madison
St., Eugene.
The annual pageant, with 3,
000 persons expected to attend
this year, will be given at 6:30,
9 and 11 a.m. J
In the pageant, scenes from
events leading to the Crucifix
ion are presented with narra
tion and appropriate vocal mu
sic. The music is presented by a
45-voice choir, and there are 90
persons in the pageant cast. Ap
propriate costumes, lighting and
stage settings are used in the
production.
Child care will be provided
for pre-school age youngsters at
each performance.
"The Road to Calvary" was
adapted for the stage by the
Rev. Robert Pagett, assistant
pastor of the church, who also
serves as director of the choir.
This will be the third year
that First Assembly has fea
tured the pageant on Easter
Sunday.
