tion of the disputed TTX war
plane contract and a fresh start
on negotiations "certainly is
within the realm of possibility."
However, at the Pentagon, a
Defense Department spokesman
said Sunday night that the Gen
eral Dynamics Corp., Fort
Worth, Tex., which holds the
contract, has been given no in
structions to slow down or
change pace in the development
of the plane.
Work on producing 22 test
aircraft Is going ahead and the
company will soon be sent $23
million, the next payment under
an initial design contract of $28
million.
Mundt, of South Dakota, is
the senior Republican member
of the Senate investigations sub
committee, which has been look
ing into the award of any signs
of favoritism.
He told a reporter the sub
committee has invited both Gen
eral Dynamics and the Boeing
Co., Seattle, Wash. credited by
some military evaluators as
promising a better, safer and
cheaper plane to submit writ
ten statements defending their
designs as a prelude to testi
mony expected later from their
top officials. The hearings may
resume Tuesday.
Senate Slates Vote
On Wilderness Bill
WASHINGTON (UPD The Sen
ate agreed Monday to vote Tues
day on its bill to create a na
tional wilderness preservation
system.
With Sen. Clinton P. Ander
son, D-N.M., predicting the bill's
passage, debate on the measure
opened Monday but most Senate
members were committed to at
tend the opening day baseball
game and a short working ses
sion was scheduled.
The Senate agreed to meet at
10 a.m. Tuesday and start vot
ing on amendments to the bill
one bour later. This assured a
vote on passage Tuesday.
Sen. Peter H. Dominick, R
Colo. who favors a wilderness
system to preserve millions of
acres in its natural state, said
the pending bill would have
trouble passing the House.
Dominick, like some other
Republicans, challenged the
bill's failure to give Congress
more control over additions to
the wilderness system.
He told the Senate that only
2 per cent of those visiting pub
lic lands now actually enter
existing wilderness areas. Dom
inick also said the provision
that only the President could
give final approval' to construc
tion of water and other facili
ties in the wilderness system
could "seriously hamper" such
construction in many states.
Sen. George D. Aiken, R-Vt.,
told Anderson he would support .
the bill even though it covers1
no areas in his state.
The legislation would immedi-;
ately place 36 million acres ofj
public lands into a national wil-,
derfiess preservation system. 1
However, supporters of the bill 1
said 28 million acres would be
subject to early review and pos
sibly removal from the system.
The legislation defines "wil
derness" as an area "where man
himself is a visitor who does not
remain."
Sen. Gordon Allott, R-Colo.,
among those who fear the legis
lation would "lock up" natural
resources, led a fight to amend
the bill to provide for specific
congressional approval of any
transfers of land to the system.
Allott was joined by 14 sena
tors in sponsoring an amend
ment which would require presi
dential recommendation for
additions to the system to be
approved by a House-Senate
resolution before going into ef
fect. The Anderson bill provides
for lands to be added to the wil
derness system by the President
after recommendation by either
the interior or agriculture secre
tary. The action would then be
reviewed by Congress, with dis
approval possible by either the
House or the Senate.
