Knee Operation to Put Liston on Sidelines at Least Six Months

knee operation will put heavy
weight champion Sonny Liston
out of action for at least six
months. He may not light again
until next year.
The return bout with Floyd
Patterson, which has been hang
' ing by a thread for several
- weeks, was postponed indefi
nitely Wednesday night by the
Miami Boxing Commission, after
an official examination that re
vealed damage to the cartilage
in Liston's left knee.
"It is our opinion that this
knee should have the benefit of
surgical procedure," said a re
port by Dr. A. H. Weiland,
widely known orthopedic sur
geon who made the examina
tion. It would take at least' six
months for the knee to heal
after such an operation. Dr.
Weiland said. One of Liston's
associates said the champion
probably will not schedule a
fight during the remainder of
this year.
When the rematch with Pat
terson will be fought now is up
to Liston. Where it will be is
up to Patterson, who has the
right in the return bout to name
the site.
Quietly, Patterson closed his
Tropical Park .training camp
Tuesday night and began an au
tomobile trip to his home in

Championship Sports, Inc., pre
pared to start refunding to
ticket buyers this morning some
$74,000 now in the U1L General
Manager Al Bojan said cancella
tion of the April 10 fight would
cost the promoters about $50,
000. A few buyers had wandered
in to get refunds earlier this
week, after Liston made his
surprise departure for Chicago,
saying he needed a. rest at
home.
The boxing commission or
dered him to come back for an
examination Friday but he
boarded a plane Wednesday
morning within hours after
learning that he would have to
return. At the Miami Airport
on arrival, he said he was here
to "settle this thing. They're be
ginning to hurt my feelings
now."
The return match with Patter
son baa been embroiled. in con
troversy ever since it was an
nounced that it would be held
in Miami Beach. It was origin
ally scheduled for April 4, then
postponed until April 10 be
cause of Liston's knee.
Bolan has accused Nilon of
deliberately stalling the fight
because of his hatred for Cham
pionship Sports. Nilon denied
it, saying he was interested
only in getting it over, freeing
Liston from the restrictions of
the return bout contract, and
putting him in the driver's seat
to call the shots as champion.

parently was recovering when
he hurt it again March 13.
"You know how you set the
knee when you're fixing to
throw a left hook," Liston ex
plained to the doctor. "I
slammed a hook into the heavy
bag and my knee popped out of
joint." .
Less than two hours after the
examination, a glum Liston I

leisurely trip and Patterson
would stop in several cities to
visit friends, reaching New
York Monday.
