DEAR ABBY: A neighbor of mine promised her husband
the wouldn't smoke any more, so she took up chewing tobacco.
It ii disgusting enough to see a man chewing, but a woman
doing it looks terrible. She claims lots of women chew but few
people know it.
I have hinted that It looks bad, but she goes right on chew
ing. The poor soul must have the habit so strong she can't
quit now. Will you ask your readers to pray for her?

DEAR FRIEND: An entire nation could "pray" for her,
but the Lord needs her cooperation. A bad habit never disap
pear miraculously. It's an "undo-it-yourself" project.
DEAR ABBY: I am concerned about my daughter. She is
lovely. Intelligent, happily married woman with two fine
children. She has been seeing a clinical psychologist for a year.
She is not mentally ill. I've tried to discuss her problem with
her but she refuses to confide in me. I know it's fashionable
these days to run to psychiatrists and psychologists, but I hate
to see my daughter spend her husband's hard-earned money
on auch a frivolous expense. How can I convince my daughter
ihe is foolish for continuing this costly fad?

DEAR MOTHER: One need not be mentally 111 to require
help with an emotional problem. If your daughter thinks she
seeds this kind of help, leave her alone. And be glad the has

DEAR ABBY: My problem is an over-affectionate husband.
When he leaves for work, he kisses me. When he comes home,
he kisses me. If we should meet anywhere else, he hugs and
kisses me. He doesn't care whether we are alone or not. He is
always telling me how nice I look and other such compliments.
He can't keep his innermost thoughts to himself. Sometimes
it is very embarrassing. Please understand, I really love my
husband, but his constant show of affection annoys me. How
can I discourage him a little without discouraging him alto

Annual Drive
Mrs. Thomas F. Nugent, fi
nance chairman of Eugene
League of Women Voters today
announced the names of six Eu
gene women who will serve on
her steering committee for the
163 finance drive scheduled to
begin Feb. 5.
They ara Mrs. John Cockrell,
Mrs. Richard Hayward, Mrs.
Julius Hessel, Mrs. Robert Leep
er, Mrs. Martin Schmitt and Mrs.
Donald Watson.
In announcing the finance
drive, Mrs. Nugent explained
that local Leagues, in addition
to financing their own programs,
support completely the state and
national organizations of the
League of Women Voters of the
United States.
To meet its budget, the
League of Women Voters seeks
annually to supplement its in
come from dues and contribu
tions from its own members
with contributions from friends
of the League In the commun
ity; many of them supporters of
the League for many years.
The League of Woman Voters
is a non-partisan organization
open to women of voting age. Its
purpose is the promotion of po
litical responsibility thougn in
formed and active participation
of citizens in government.
Lutheran
Women Meet
Lutheran church women of
the Willamette area will gather
Friday in Eugene for their first
district assembly since the merg
er of four Lutheran bodies into
the Lutheran Church of America.
Meeting is scheduled for 9:30
a.m. at United Lutheran Church,
22nd and Washington Sts., with
registration at S a.m. All Lu
theran church women are In
vited to attend. The assembly
is part of the Pacific Northwest
Synodical unit of the Lutheran
Church of America.
Special guest will be Mrs.
Walter J. Knutson of Portland,
president of the Pacific North
west Synodical unit. Mrs. Knut
son will open the assembly.

be led by Mrs. Emil Swanson of
Seattle and Mrs. George Kru
beck of Longview, Wash. Speak
er will be Miss Delia Brown,
former missionary to Tanganyika.

Party Peaches
There's a party flair to a des
sert of warm peaches with
brandy sauce. Simply heat
canned cling peach halves in
saucepan or oven. Top with a
sauce made by whipping li cup
powdered sugar into Vi cup
heavy cream. Fold in 2 table
spoons brandy and serve over
hot peaches.

Sear Heloise:
Our tank style vacuum would not pick up lint at all. I tried
to drop a piece of silverware into the hose, but it did no good.
The hose was plugged up for sure.
I ran outside and put the garden hose at one end and out
came the plug of threads, etc. Now our vacuum has all of the
suction of a new one. READER

Now ladies, she must have a plastic type hose on her tank
vacuum. Personally, I would not use ths method on a cloth
hose. It would take it too long to dry and might causa mildew
or rust. Besides if you used it before it was thoroughly dry, the
dust would stick to the hose Itself and probably clog it
further.
For those who do not have plastic type hoses, here's what
I do:
I remove the hose from the suction end and place It en tha
exhaust end of the vacuum cleaner. This way tha dust blows
itself out.
If something has clogged It, hold your hand over the end
of the hose for a minute and then let-go! This builds up a
vacuum inside the hose and usually blowa out anything that Is
in it.
Now gals, don't try to do this In your dining room or living
room. It is best done on the back porch. When that wad of
stuff does come out, it might be followed by a blast of dust.
And if you can get your tank out on the back steps, It's even
better. Be sure to hold the hose away from you when blow
ing and before removing your hand.

When my husband or guests ara late for dinner and my
mashed potatoes are ready to be served, I just drain the water
off of them (mash if you desire) then place a cotton or linen
napkin over them and put the cover back on top of the pot.
This way they will remain hot for at least another one
half hour or more. I know this works.

Dear Heloise:
For the girls and boys who have worn out tennis shoes I
have found an attractive way to patch them.
Where the holes are . . . try sewing on a button or em
broidering a button hole with a colored thread. Then apply
the button!
Also, it has become a fad in my town to sew patches of
different shapes out of heavy material to cover the holes. It
