Long-Long Show
TV's New Trend
By RICK DU BROW
' of the United Press International
HOLLYWOOD You know
the late-late show. Now make
way for the long-long one.
The way the network trend is
Joing, never will so many peo
ple see so much of the same
programs so often.
Come next fall, comedies will
be just about the only weekly
half -hour entertainment stories
left. "The Rifleman" and "Have
Gun, Will Travel" are going un
der, and the two new half-hour
anthology dramas "True" and
the Lloyd Bridges show are
pretty well considered dead.
The hour drama dominates for
the present in prime-time. But
the 90-minute program looms
more and more.
The reasons include: The usu
al network desire to tie up view
ers for a longer time against
broadcasting opposition; the
competition of three- and four-
John Daly Plans
To Leave Show
NEW YORK OP John Daily,
the host and moderator of the
CBS show, "What's My Line?"
eaid Monday he plans to leave
the program next October be
cause of a contract dispute.
"I received an offer last week
for a new five-year contract,"
Daily told a reporter, "but it
was offered on a flat, nonnego-
tiable basis take it or leave it.
I felt that after 14 years with a
program that this was some
what less than responsible busi-
ness manners.
"So, of course, I told them
that I could not accept that
kind of an offer. I must say that
I am going to leave the pro
gram in early October."
In a recent Nielsen rating,
"What's My Line?" was listed
among the 10 most popular pro
grams in the nation. Regular
panel members are Arlcne
Francis, Bennett Cerf and Dor
othy Kilgallen.
hour blockbuster movies; the
lure of the fast-coming pay-TV;
and other tempting future mar
kets such as closed-circuit thea
ter television. As the average
citizen's leisure time increases,
the competition to occupy him
and divert his spending dollar
becomes fierce, particularly in
view of other burgeoning recre
ations such as travel, do-it-your
self hobbies, boating, photogra
phy, increased outdoor living
including swimming pools and
interest in hi-fi and stereo.
The way for long-long shows
has been paved by the "Today"
and "Tonight" programs, by
special news and sports events,
by local movies.
Now, this season, we have two
prime-time movies a week, on
Saturday and Sunday. And start
ing two weeks from Monday
night, there will be a third such
film night, on Mondays.
NBC's "The Virginian," the
first 90-minute dramatic weekly
scries, has made a go of it. ABC
already has scheduled a 90-minute
cops-robbers-and trial series
for next season, as well as a
weekly two-hour Saturday night
show with Jerry Lewis.
In addition, we have such
long-long syndicated' programs
as Steve Allen s, as well as Da
vid Susskind's "Open End." And
next season CBS-TV expands its
evening news report to 30 min
utes, which, combined with lo
cal station addenda, often runs
to an hour or so.
"Ben Casey" was asked to ex
pand to 90 minutes, but thus far
has refused. Jack 1'aar is re
ported interested it doing a 90
minute show next season and
NBC-TV is reported interested
in having him replace Johnny
Carson once a week on To
night." And hopeful producers
are saying huge production costs
of long-long weekly series can
be made back by releasing the
programs as movies overseas
In short, buy a cushion.
