In the vernacular of the
times, this is a house for the
"emerging family" one
whose population and eco-,
nomic development, shall we
say, hasn't reached its full
potential.
In a basic space of only
1,300 square feet, architect
Samuel Paul has packaged
seven rooms, including four
bedrooms, and 2Vi baths.
Yet nothing is crowded;
there is plenty of elbow room,
plenty of space for modest
entertaining, plenty of romp
ing room for youngsters.
In other words, it's the type
house a young and growing
family with a young and grow
ing income should study close
ly. The reason there is so much
' house in so little basic space
is because it is a IK -story
model, though from the street
it looks like a ranch. In this
type house the roof has a
sharper pitch so that simply
by including a dormer the
space that normally would be
an -attic becomes a perfectly
habitable second story.
This means the second
story, which contains two
large bedrooms and a full
bath, doesn't have to be fin
ished until somebody comes
along to occupy them.
It amounts to S48 square
feet of extra space at extreme
ly low cost, since it doesn't
require what could be called
structural building costs, with
the added benefit that it can
be provided bit by bit.
Just as the formal area Is
enlarged functionally by com
bining living and dining
rooms, the family room
kitchen combination provides
a spacious 231-square-foot in
formal area. Plenty of win
dows assure lots of natural
light and fresh air, and make
supervision easy whether the
kids are on the flagstone play
patio or covered front veran
dah. Architect Paul has provided
a high degree of privacy for
the downstairs bedrooms.
Not only are they clearly
zoned away from the living
area with sound buffers be
tween, but a sliding door
completely closes off the
sleeping wing.

dual vanity serves both bed
rooms, and the nearby lava
tory is perfectly placed for
emergency family service.
Upstairs, the expansion bed
rooms are even larger than
those below, and the second
floor bathroom also has a dual
vanity.. All four bedrooms
are characterized by an enor
mous amount of closet space.
Speaking of closets, don't
overlook the three under the
balcony; two for coats and
one for kitchen and utility
storage.
The house contains a par
tial cellar, located under the
foyer and bedroom wing, with
ample space for recreation,
utility and storage space. The
441-square-foot garage also is
oversized for extra storage
room.
Another plus feature of
the house is its durable ex
terior not only in materials
but also in styling. Its rustic
colonial flavor, with stone
veneer, stucco and a dash of
redwood siding, has been
charming and tasteful for dec
ades and likely will remain
so.
The house itself is 46'6
wide by 31'10" deep, but the
garage protrusion makes its
over-all dimensions S5'6 wide
by S4'2" deep and architect
Paul suggests a plot of 70' by
100' to take full advantage of
its looks and outdoor features.

CHICAGO (UPD Elegance is the keynote for the home
furnishings industry in 1B63.
The return to traditional furniture styles and colors is
credited to a number of trends, Including Mrs. Jacqueline
Kennedy's restoration program at the White House.
Some home furnishings experts think the trend is sparked
also by a wish to return to a less anxious age. Traditional
furnishings give a psychological feeling of being removed
from the nuclear age, they say.
Whatever the reason, the trend is definitely toward ele
gance and more ornamentation, said Dorothy Eastline, assist
ant to the director of advertising sales and promotion for the
Merchandise Mart
Miss Eastline predicted "French and Italian Provincial de
signs will be very strong, continuing the trend to greater for
mality." The continuing interest in Early American designs
also will continue, she said.
She said the ornate look will influence not only designs of
large pieces of furniture, but also lamps, wall accessories, fab
rics and even the type of hardware sold for picture frames.
A survey of 650 furniture retailers showed that Americans
preferred modern and Early American furniture in 1962, Home
Furnishings Daily, the trade publication, reported.
The traditional English design made a big comeback in
'62 and included the classic Chippendale and Regency designs.
The National Retail Furniture Association predicted there
will be some drop in the demand for Early American in 1963.
Italian and French Provincial are expected to continue in
strong demand, followed by traditional.
