County-City CD Sets
Staff Dinner Meeting
The Lane County-City of Eu
gene Civil Defense organization
will hold its annual staff dinner
meeting tonight at 7 in the Elks
Club on Centennial Drive near
Eugene.
In addition to reports on the
county's shelter and medical
hell-help programs, there will
be a special report on the new
theory of national defense as
outined recently by the Secre
tary of Defense.
OSU to Hold Science Institute

this coming summer will again
provide special training in sci
ence and mathematics for su
perior high school students
from across the U.S.
OSU received two of the 167
grants awarded by the National
Science Foundation to leading
educational and research insti
tutions located throughout the
country. It is the only Oregon
school on the select list.
About 6.S00 outstanding U. S.
high school students will be
chosen for the special advanced
training in an effort to accele
rate their educational develop
ment. The training is beyond
that available in high school
courses.
One of the grants to OSU is
for a six-week training institute
in earth and atmospheric sci
ences. Twenty-five top high
school boys who have just com
pleted their junior year, will be
picked for the June 24-to-Aug. 2
program. Prof. John F. Tatom
of the atmospheric science
branch of the OSU Science Re
search Institute will be in
charge. The NSF grant in sup
port of the training was Jll,
715. The other grant, for $24,385,
will support a seven-week math
ematics institute for 55 boys
whb have finished the 10th and
11th grades. Robert E. Gaskell,
professor of mathematics, is
program director. A similar
summer Institute last year drew
outstanding youth math "whiz
zes" from as far away as New
York City.
Selection of youths will be
based upon scholastic ability,
scientific motivation, and high
school science-math teacher rec
ommendations, OSU officials
said. The NSF grants cover
costs of instruction and soma
room, board and travel funds
for the superior students picked
for the programs.
Restaurant Operator Dead at Age of 73

Aebi, a prominent Portland
area restaurant operator, has
died at the age of 73.

rant in in Lake Oswego and
Chalet L'Abbe and the Oregon
Liquor Control Commission
cafeteria at Milwaukie. He re
cently resigned as a member of
the Milwaukie City Council be
cause of poor health.
