Reward Offered
In Bombing Case
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. UPD
Gov. John Patterson has offered
a maximum state reward of $1,
000 for the conviction of persons
who threw a dynamite bomb
into a Negro residential area
from a moving car.
Other donations from the
city's two newspapers, a civic
group and a private citizen,
boosted the total reward to $5,
000. The dynamite damaged the
Bethel Baptist Church and four
homes last Friday night and
showered glass and plaster on a
group of children practicing a
play in the church basement but
no one was seriously hurt.

Statewide TV
Board Urged
By Committee
SALEM Wl The legislative
fiscal committee recommended
this week that the 1963 legisla
ture try to case the confusion
on the availability of funds for
educational television to higher
education and to primary and
secondary education.
The committee also recom
mended the establishment of a
statewide television council
with the authority to coordinate
educational television facilities.
The education television sys
tem of the state now is under
the state Board of Higher Edu
cation. Some criticism has
arisen that primary and secon
dary education has not had
enough of the program time.
The fiscal comn.ittce report
was presented to a pre-scssion
conference of Oregon legisla
tors reviewing the state's fi
nancial picture.
The committee said it found
that during the past five years
educational television has been
almost exclusively applied to
the college level.
"Oregon has emphasized col
lege-level educational televi
sion," the committee report
said. "The rest of the country,
elementary and secondary edu
cational television."
Workers Get
Free Coffee
ROCHESTER, N. Y. Oft-Free
coffee, marked down from five
cents, has been awarded union
employes of a Rochester plant
by a labor arbitrator.
Beech-Nut Cooperative Coun
cil, a union representing work
ers of the Beech-Nut Life Sav
ers Inc. plant here, filed a
grievance when a custom of
free coffe at break periods and
lunch was discontinued by the
company after 20 years. Vend
ing machines were installed, of
fering coffee for a nickel.
An arbitrator, Dr. Morrison
Hansaker of Lafayette College,
Easton, Pa., ruled free coffee
must be provided because it was
an established "condition of
employment" and had been a
factor in contract negotiations.

Jane?" and now you can hardly
turn on a television set without
tripping over her.
She visited the Jack Paar
show.
She signed to play a lawyer on
a "Perry Mason" episode.
Wednesday night she turned up
as a spinster in "The Virginian."
And Thursday night she danced,
sang and gagged (joked may be
a better word) with Andy Wil
liams on NBC-TV.
Part of tho reason for her
sudden burst into the medium
is, of course, the success of the
movie. But part of it may also
stem from an advertisement she
placed in the Hollywood trade
press some while back, before
public approval of the film was
assured.
It was a full-page ad, termed
"situation -wanted," and said:
"Mother of three 10, 11 and 15
divorcee. American. 30 years'
experience as an actress in mo
tion pictures. Mobile still and
more affable than rumor would
have it. Wants steady employ
ment in Hollywood. Has had
Broadway. Bette Davis . . . ref
erences upon request."
On the Paar show. Miss Davis
was hampered by laryngitis, but
found time to make what she ap
parently thought was a devas
tatingly funny remark about
newspapers, though, of course,
she had chosen them as the
place to ask for work.
Well, my old man once told
me it wasn't polite to tell a lady
when her slip was showing, so
let us think, instead, in terms of
gallantry a much nicer quality
than pettiness. And thus we
come to Thursday night, and the
side of Miss Davis that I prefer
to remember, that of a trouper.
The lordly lady of the movies
had proven her trouping mettle
in a different area not long ago
when she barnstormed through
theater after theater in New
York to sell "Baby Jane," and

Alive and
it paid off when the film incred
ibly recouped its negative cost
in its first week of release.
But Thursday night took a
different sort of guts, and she
came well-supplied. Known pri
marily as a dramatic star, she
showed the kids what confi
dence and poise arc all about.
She sings about as wonderfully
bad as Rosalind Russell, and
with just as much forthright
ncss and gusto.
She sang folk songs with Wil
liams and the New Christy Min
strels, and she hoofed to a
square dance and also to a
Broadway-style number with
eight chorus boys. She is a hot
property in this area, fellas.
Was it a comedown for her to
sing an easy twist-type song?
Nonsense. She's not living in
the past. She's alive and kick
ing. Good for her.
