'Dear
Abby
Abigail Van Bur en
, . DEAR ABBY: I admit I don't keep a very clean house but
Its not my fault. My mother hated housework and she never
..bothered much with housekeeping. She taught me to put the
: housework last and said, "If you don't clean your house, your
husband will." Maybe this is a poor excuse, but it's the truth
.and I just had to get it off my chest.
I POOR HOUSEKEEPER
DEAR POOR HOUSEKEEPER: Your mother's advice
r sounds like a feeble excuse for poor housemanship. To com
plete the picture she should have added, "There are many
.husbands who are mopping the floor with their wives every
Uy." Get organised, Honey!
r,
J DEAR ABBY: Please print this for some girls who need it.
lit expresses my feelings and the feelings of many of my
friends. If a girl doesn't wear lipstick even if she isn't so
hot I would sooner kiss her than the girl with lipstick, be-
cause guys who come home with lipstick on their shirts al
"most get killed by their mothers. I thank you.
FIFTEEN AND ALMOST KILLED ONCE
1 ...
t DEAR ABBY: You may consider this a silly question, but
please, darling, try to help me. I have just lost my fifth gar
bage canl The last one I painted with black enamel, "PLEASE
..DO NOT STEAL THIS CAN." And I put my address on it.
'My neighbor said she saw a man stop and get out of a Cadillac
car and HE took it. Can you imagine anything so cheap and
flirty? So this morning I put my garbage in a Maison Blanc
, bag, and the garbage collector refused to take it. Is this the
.way they take care at beautiful St. Charles Avenue? The
'authorities pay me no attention. Can you give me a solution?
1 ' MRS. MARIE DE M.
J New Orleans, La.
I DEAR MARIE: Telephone your Department of Public
Health and ask them to put you in touch with the Sanitation
: Department. Then tell them your story! If you get no results,
.take it right up to the mayor. (The problem not the gar
bage.) , x ...
DEAR ABBY: My 22-year-old son came home heart-broken
.last night. He has been working and saving his money for a
:year to marry what we thought was a fine girl. He surprised
; her with a diamond ring and she refused it, saying she would
rather wait until he could afford a BIGGER one. She said she
would rather have no diamond than a small one. Is this modern
J thinking? HEARTSICK MOTHER
DEAR MOTHER: No. There have always been girls who
-place great deal of importance on the size of a diamond.
Tell your ton to save the little gem for a girl who appreciates
?lt And him.

Sugar Plum Cupcakes
Renamed for Yule Seals
This year's gay and colorful
Christmas Seals have inspired
Mrs. Mark 0,- Hatfield, "Ore
fan's First Lady of Christmas
Seals," to bring forth her prized
recipe for sugar plum cupcakes
and re-name it the "Christmas
Seal Sugar Plum Cupcake."
Why? Because Mrs. Hatfield
a'ayi the delighted children on
this year's Christmas Seal, hang
ing the double-barred cross on
their tree as part of the prep
aration for Christmas, recalled
to her mind the age-old account
of The Night Before Christmas
when "visions of sugar plums
danced through their heads."
Mrs. Hatfield adds: '
"At thisf festive and magical
time, I think Steve Dohanos, the
artist who designed this year's
Christmas Seal, has the answer
in his own words, , 'the 1062
Christmas Seals say to every-
. one put Christmas Seals into
Christmas so why not in the
kitchen where children can help
make the cupcakes and thus
learn about Christmas Seals.'
Here is the recipe:
Christmas Seal Sugarplum
Cupcakes

Mrs. Mark O. Hatfield)

2 pounds gumdrops (cut up
.. . . no black ones) . v

Queen Vera Reigns for 'Her Day9
No queen ever had a happier set of "sub
jects" than Vera Humphrey w ho reigned Tues
day over the Birthday Kingdom in Christmas .
Tree Land.
Wearing a regal robe, Mrs. Humphrey was
crowned "Queen for a Day" at a party mark
ing her 70th birthday at the home of Mrs.
Donald Scelye. Included among the guests
were 11 fellow-residents from Sunset Home.
Mrs. Humphrey, who is in a wheel chair, was
presented with a shower of gifts from her
many friends who appreciate the things she
docs for them all through the year sewing
on buttons, hemming dresses, setting hair,
manicuring nails.
Guests were seated at a table which was
covered with a white cloth with silver bands
and centered with red candles in milk glass
holders and red poinsettias. The birthday cake
also was trimmed with poinsettias. Christmas
decorations were used throughout the house,
in a red and gold theme.
James Donovan, a neighbor, was master
of ceremonies. Among the guests, in addition
to the Sunset Home residents, were Mrs. Edith
Day, Mr. Seelye's aunt, Mrs. Robert Kcclcr
and Mrs. Donald Mross. Mrs. Keeler and
daughter, Linda, made the queen's crown and
Mrs. Keeler's Girl Scout troop designed place
cards and invitations. Mrs. Mross made the
sheaf of pink rosebuds for the queen and
her daughter, Jcannette presented them to
the honor guest.
. ' :: -
Her 80th birthday was marked this week
by Mrs. H. C. Skadc, and in honor of the
day her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Lombard of
Cottage Grove, arranged an open houso at
Mrs. Skade's apartment at 1408 Ferry St.
Friends called throughout the afternoon, to
the number of 55.
Assisting with serving were Mrs. Skade'i
sister, Mrs. Jorgcn Hansen; her granddaugh
ter, Mrs. Thomas Williams, and also Mrs. Her
bert Lombard Jr., both of Cottage Grove.
Among the Danish delicacies served was
a Kransc Kage, traditional feast cake made for
the occasion.
The sound of girlish voices, which friends
associato with the home of Mrs. John R. Mur
phy, but may have missed during the school-away-from-home
era of past months, is back
again. Ellen and Margaret, the former a '
junior and history major, the latter a soph
more majoring in psychology, are home form
the College of Holy Names in Oakland, Calif.,

Hymn, Carol
Origin Traced
NEW YORK 0IPD St. Francis
of Assist often was called
"Father of the Christmas Carol"
because, about the 12th century
in Italy, he used the stable
scene, plus a small choir, to
dramatize the story of the birth
of Christ. - -
The occasion also was the
origin of the Creche.
Down through the years,
carols by the carload have been
turned out by the pens of tal
ented and inspired writers. One
noted song writer, Charles Wes
ley, composed 6,500 hymns and
carols during the mld-18th cen
tury, according to researchers
planning an album of Christ
mas records.
Wesley's most popular carol
then and now is "Hark, '.The
Herald Angels Sing."
Another prolific song writer
was Isaac Watts, who wrote
"Joy To The World" in 1719
and, at his death in 1748, left
52 published volumes of hymns
and carols.
