'Baby Lift' Back in Operation
Harry Holl's "baby lift" ,1a back In business.
' Kay Cates, of Salem, chairman of the Child Welfare sub
committee of the Oregon Welfare Commission, said Thurs
day the subcommittee has approved Holt's application for
license to operate a. child placement agency in Oregon.
Holt's office at Creswell said Friday this means the pro
cessing of adoptions of Korean orphans for Oregon families
will be stepped up considerably.
Mrs. V. A. Nelson, office manager, said adoptions next ,
year will probably be "at least double" the 200 the Holt
agency handled this year.
Holt, former Creswell farmer and logger who is now in
Korea, has brought more than 2,500 Korean children to
this country for adoption. His program was drastically re
stricted a year ago when the federal government changed
its immigration laws concerning "proxy" adoptions.
The new law required prospective parents either' to
travel to Korea, at considerable expense, to personally adopt
the child in that country, or else to work through the immi
gration procedures of their state.
Mrs. Nelson said the state's action means the Holt's new
child placement agency will be able to carry out all the
arrangements ior adoptions as far as Oregon families are
concerned.
It will also be able to handle adoptions for families liv
ing in states that do not have their own adoption laws.
Mrs. Nelson said a qualified social worker has been hired
to head up the child placement agency and will be here
shortly. .

Giant Barge
Loads Cargo
At Mapleton
MAPLETON A huge ocean
going barge, 220 feet long and
SS feet at the beam, docked
at the U.S. Plywood mill here
Thursday tn take on a load
of lumber.
It is believed to be one of
the largest vessels ever to
travel this far up the Siusla'w
river.
- The barge, owned by Sause
Brothers of Coos Bay, will
take on 2 3 million board feet
of lumber (equivalent to 70
railroad boxcars) for a four
day journey to Wilmington,
Calif.
Only rivals to the sea-borne
behemoth were the flat bot
tomed lumber schooners that
plyed the river until the early
1920's. They were put out of
action by the railroad.
The barge displaces 3,300
tons and can be loaded at a
rate of 100,000 board feet per
hour, according to Jack Rob
ertson, area manager for
Sause Brothers. The hull de
sign, worked out by the Mich
igan Institute of Technology,
adds up to a knot and a half
of speed to the vessel over
the conventional barge.
Another unusual feature,
according to Robertson, is
that everything is loaded
above deck. The barge has no
hold.
One 1,200 horsepower tug
is needed to tow the carrier
fully loaded.
The barge was moored at
a new dock constructed by the
firm. Fork lifts brought the
lumber to the dock in relays
where a big crane hoisted it
onto the carrier's deck. It is
scheduled to make the two-and-one-half
hour voyage to
the mouth of the Siuslaw Sunday.
