Today Show'
Star Happy
With Work
By CYNTHIA LOWRY
or the Associated Press
NEW YORK Pat Fontaine,
the good-looking, good-humored
young woman with whom mil
lions of slecpy-eycd Americans
drink their morning orange
juice and coffee, undoubtedly is
the happiest woman in the
world who has to get to work
by 5:30 a.m.
Since mid-August Pat has
been the distaff regular on
NBC's "Today Show." That is
the news-and-amuse program
which, from 7 to 9 weekday
mornings over much of the na
tion, gets the breadwinners out
of the house on time and pre
pares the stay-at-homes for
their chores.
Pat, a native of Salt Lake
City, theoretically won her
place on the "Today" panel
with Hugh Downs, Jack Lcscou
lic and Frank Blair, after a two
week try-out in July. In fact, it
was the second knocking of op
portunity. NBC officials, who
had seen her work in Little
Rock, Ark., and St. Louis, Mo.,
were interested in having her
Join the show several year6 ago
when Betsy Palmer quit to re
sume her acting career.
"I just couldn't leave St.
Louis," she said, "because I had
really just started there, with
two weather shows."
She remained three years to
talk of highs, lows, pressure
systems and advising whether
or not to carry umbrellas. Then
the second bid came and she
accepted.
A bubbling, energetic soul,
Pat thrives on a schedule which
would kill a lesser female. A
divorcee, she lives with her five
children (three girls and two
boys, between the ages of 17
and 10) in a big, old seven-bed
room house in a New York City
(uburb.
A hired limousine picks her
up in the predawn darkness and
gets her to the mid-Manhattan
goldfish globe whence the pro
gram is broadcast, in time to
confer, organize and rehearse
the upcoming show.
She returns, usually, in the
mid-afternoon, to be with her
family. Bedtime is around 10
p.m. "I don't need a great deal
nf sleep, but my social life suf
fers." She adores her work, loves
colleagues, is thrilled to meet
the great, the interesting and
the offbeat characters who turn
up on the show. Her idea of a
perfect, restful weekend is to
climb into a station wagon with
all the children and take off for
two days of skiing.

President's Turn
On TV Monday
By RICK DU BROW
Of the United Press International
Television Previews
2 Shows Feature Grid Star
HOLLYWOOD It's Kennedy
night on television again Mon
day. This time it's the Presi
dent's turn.
Not only will he appear on all
three networks in a "pooled
one-hour interview, but he also
will be seen in half-hour broad
casts on which he is to light the
White House Christmas tree and
speak again. '
The interview, a joi effort
by ABC, CBS and NBC ,ach of
whom will be represented by a
reporter is expected to center
around a review by the Presi
dent of his first two years in
office. It is slated for 6:30 p.m.
(EST) by ABC and CBS, and
8:30 p.m. (EST) by NBC.
The tree lighting is sched
uled for 5 p.m. (EST) by CBS
and NBC.
It is a bit shocking CBS and
ABC are not showing the inter
view fully in prime time, espe
cially after landing the big
broadcast. But at CBS it is
bread-and-butter night: Lucille
Suit Filed Against
'Dr. Kildare' Star
LOS ANGELES UWHis for
mer talent agency says Richard
Chamberlain, star of television's
"Dr. Kildare" series, owes it
commissions.
MCA Inc., now out of the
talent agency business, says
Chamberlain owes it an unspeci
fied amount of money under his
contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
So too, the firm said,
do several other stars, and
Chamberlain's suit will be just
the first of many.
KATU-TV
Channel 2, Cable 2
Ball, Danny Thomas, Andy Grif
fith, "I've Got A Secret," etc.
And ABC has "Cheyenne," "The
Rifleman," "Stoney Burke" and
"Ben Casey." If there is any
other reason for the early sched
uling, it still seems poor judg
ment. The thought that it may
be a news beat doesn't seem to
llold up here. Poor papa may
get stuck in the Christmas rush,
after work and miss the whole
thing.
NBC's decision probably was
easier since it is pre-empting
Saints and Sinners," which has
been canceled anyway; but the
network has advertised it will
pull any of its top shows for a
big news story.
Big question: Can the Presi
dent beat Lucy in the ratings?
Shelly Winters, an overrated,
essentially one -note actress,
turned up Thursday night on
ABC-TV's "Premiere as an un
pleasant invalid whose demands
imprison her sister. But it was
her co-star, Joan Hackett, who
captured the hour with a dis
play of wide range on the per
forming scale.
The play, convincing but noth
ing more, reached its climax
when Miss Hackett, as the
younger sister, finally wheels
from her forced life of drabness
and goes with a date to a movie,
thinking she has killed Miss
Winters by not renewing her
pill prescription. It turns out
Shelley never needed the pills
and her sister leaves her for
good.
Miss Haskctt was alternately
warm, cold, defeated, triumph
ant, and one could feel the dif
ferences acutely. Miss Winters'
portrayal, however, was limited
by the same voice and physical
mannerisms that restrict almost
all her roles.
