Adults Tackle
New Method
For Reading
WASHINGTON (UPD Special
courses for adults who can't
read well are on the increase
and new teaching approaches
are in use.
Many non-readers are reluc
tant to admit their deficiency,
so they hesitate to attend for
mal classes.
. For this reason, television
courses in beginning reading
have been extremely effective
in Baltimore, Md., St. Louis, Mo.
and Memphis, Tcnn., reports
the National Education Associa
tion. ". Hundreds of Philadelphians
have learned to read in their
own noim-a through a .series of
half-hour programs called
"Operation Alphabeh"
: The course has been so suc
cessful that it is being used also
'in 40 other cities. Along with
regular viewing of the program,
tlhe student docs practice exer
cises in an operation alphabet
workbook produced by the na
tion's tup reading experts.
; Filmed reading courses arc
3ised in many public school
speed-reading classes. Many
ladult teachers also use mechani
cal devices which condition the
Student to read at a faster rale
-iund help break bad habits such
;s re-reading previous sentences
in (I lip reading.
Teaching machines soon will
!enter adult reading classes,
reading experts say. Programs
:hlready have been developed for
vocabulary improvement. A
Jiigh school reading course for
.iiso in teaching machines will
rbe marketed soon.
"Both the teaching machine
and the student workbook pro
vide an excellent means for in
Mivlduallzed adult reading in
struction, according to Edwin

Managing time is like going
on a diet and just as hard to
get started. To read about it is
apt to be fruitless, because it all
depends on one person. Guess
who? Try writing down each
day what you "must do," "ought
to do" and "hope to do." What
fun it is to cross off those fin
ished chores especially those
hope-to-do jobs!
Is storage space tight in your
kitchen? Sardines may not he
comfortable, but they are well
organized. Maybe that's a smart
tin. Organize that big open
space under the sink with one
or moro of these ideas: Cleanser
rack on tho door, sliding towel
bars, removable- step shelf, and
portable sliding shelves, now
sold at stores. These devices will
pack moro into tho space even
in a trailer or apartment. And
they go with you when you
move.

Are chemicals used to control
pests on fruits and vegetables a
hazard to your family's health?
This is controversial. You'd be
paying higher prices if chemi
cals weren't used, because some
of these foods would be scarce.
Dr. Virgil Freed, head of
OSU's Department of Agricul
tural Chemistry, says these
chemicals, although poisonous,
offer no substantial hazards to
humans if used correctly. With
out them, "both consumer and
fsrmer would suffer. Tho safe

Shower Doubles
Its Usefulness
Two shower heads instead of
ono over the tub will double
the pleasure- of showers for
most families, says Miss Vir
ginia Houtchens, Lane extension
agent.
Tho top shower head installed
six feet above the floor is the
right height for Dad and the
teen-ager son. But the second
shower head installed about
four feet above the floor is a
more suitable height for moth
er and daughter who want a
shower without drenching their
hairdo. And the family's young
est will feel more comfortable
if that nice warm "rain" falls
from not too high up.
Remember, too, to include
soap niche at each shower tak
er's level as well as in the usual
position for the tub bather.

'Dear
Abbyy
Abigail Van Buren
DEAR ABBY: I'm mad! I hope you'll publish this. It
might wake up some of these pushy parents. Why don't they
let their children enjoy their childhood instead of rushing
them into adult life? My daughter is barely 12. She is in the
sixth grade in public school. Every Friday is "dress up" day.
1 let her wear her good silk dress, little heels, no makeup. Bless
my soul if some of her little friends didn't show up in spike
heels! .One girl admitted they were her mother's. They wore
scoop necklines, make-up, mascara, nylons and the works! Now
my daughter thinks we are "babying" her be-ause she can't
dress like the other girls. How does a mother fight this trend?
BAFFLED
DEAR BAFFLED: One of the most difficult jobs of a
responsible parent is to follow his own convictions and ignore
the persistent pleadings of a child who wants to "be like the
other kids." This letter, from a reader, says It better than I.
DEAR ABBY: Please tell mothers whose daughters beg to
"be like the other girls" to take care:
My mother was "old-fashioned." No make-up until I was
18 and then very sparingly. No heels or nylons until my last
year in high school. I wasn't allowed to "go steady" in high
school and I had to be in by midnight when I had a date. I
wept and felt "babied," but now 1 am grateful for my mother's
good sense. The girls I envied and who were allowed to look
20 when they were 15 are now bored, bitter and burned out.
Many are already divorced at 22! I graduated from college in
June, and am engaged to be married at Christmas! If a mother
wants to do her daughter a favor, she will slow her up.
NOT SORRY
DEAR ABBY: Our son Insists on sending us Mother's Day
and Father's Day cards signed by both himself and his "girl
friend." This is very irritating to both his mother and me as
we do not care for his "girl" and he knows it. They are not
officially engaged, thank heavens, and we consider their com
bined signatures on his cards improper and a breach of eti
quette. Are we right in resenting our son's actions?
Respectfully,
MY WIFE AND I
DEAR MY: Call a spade a spade and admit that it's the
GIRL who irritates you, not the breach of etiquette. You could
throw the etiquette book at your son, but I wouldn't advise it,
because if they are serious his next card could be signed "Mr.
and Mrs." officially.
What's on your mind? For a personal reply, send a self
addressed, stamped envelope to Abby, Box 3365, Beverly Hills,
Calif.
