SP to Keep
Brownsville
Branch Line
The Southern Pacific Co. has
notified the City of Springfield
it Has no intention of abandon
ing its Brownsville Branch line,
City Mgr. Frank Smiley said
Monday.
Smiley said he has received
letter to this effect from A.
W. Kilborn, SP division super
intendent in Portland.
The company is expected to
start construction soon of a 75
foot wooden trestle over the
new Q Street ditch. A smaller
trestle was torn out a year ago
when the ditch was enlarged.
. For a number of months, the
city has been hopeful the com
pany might abandon the branch
line because the SP had taken
no action to replace the old
trestle.
The SP's decision not to aban
don the Brownsville line affects
the State Highway Dcpt's plans
for building a new Q Street
overpass at the proposed Sec
ond and Third Street couplet in
Springfield.
The overpass will now have
to be more expensive, accord
ing to city officials, because of
the railroad which runs adja
cent to the planned couplet.
Another effect of the SP's de
cision involves Lane County's
proposal to take over the right-of-way
of a section of the line
(if abandoned) so the Second
Third Street couplet could be
extended northward toward Co
burg. 11 the line were abandoned,
the couplet could be extended
northward from Q Street along
the railroad right-of-way to
link with the county's Belt Line
Iioad, officials said.

Fellow Citizens
of Eugene
Tuesday, November 6, election day, is an import
ant day for Eugene in many respects. On this day
we elect people to public office and approve or
disapprove measures, all of which is important to
us in our family and community life.
One of the most important of these involves the election of o candidate to fill
the position of membcr-at-large on the Eugene Water & Electric Board, a non
political position.
If we want to preserve the non-political, business-like conduct of our utility,
that has characterized it and kept it sound the past 51 years, we must keep its direc
tion in the hands of experienced and successful businessmen.
c, the undersigned, commend our Board for its outstanding community service
and urge the voters to re-elect CALVIN 11. (CAD SMITH to membership on the

Thornton To Be
A Governor
For All
Thornton is deeply conscious of
the working man, the little man.
A working man all his life himself
he is vitally concerned over the fu
ture of Oregon's jobs and industry.
The latest Dun & Bradstreet
report shows Oregon with the
highest rate of business failures in
the United States! Oregon's rate
of employment is far below that
of its neighboring states. We need
a full time governor now! We need
Bob Thornton, working with la

... to get Oregon moving.
