"In your hands lies the challenge . . .
You are the story of United Appeal the
symbol of that highest ideal, people help
ing people."
These are the words of Owen McCurry,
general chairman of the 1962-63 Lane Coun
ty United Appeal, spoken during one of
many meetings of volunteer workers he has
addressed in recent weeks.
At another time, he described the job
of reaching this year's $385,000 goal as "a
task worthy of all the zeal and ardor we
can put into it."
There are 2,000 men and women through
out Lane County who now are putting their
shoulders to that task as the campaign
passes the mid-way point, with more than
half of the goal realized.
Those people many who have worked
as volunteers annually for the past ten or
a dozen years each are performing indi
vidual roles in the behind-the-scenes drama
now going on. They have a single purpose:
To prove the validity of this year's cam
paign theme "One Gift Works Many
Wonders."
Some of the campaign workers, ranging
from housewives to business executives, are
shown here as they plot "the progress and
map the efforts of the coming few weeks.
Only through the results of those efforts
will the 35 United-Appeal-supported agen
cies in Oregon be capable of continuing
their humanitarian work.
The happy, heel-clicking Jiminy Cricket
symbolizes the campaign's enthusiastic
spirit. Robert Carlson of Eugene, above,
prepares to ink in his campaign division's
progress at one of the regular weekly re
port meetings.
Hub of the county's campaign is at tem
porary headquarters, 1247 Willamette St.,
Eugene, right. Far right, campaign workers
cluster around coffee cups at headquarters,
compiling total collections and comparing
notes.
At lower right, Westmoreland district
residential drive workers plan their part
in the campaign. Mrs. Stan Maness, left,
is Co-chairman. Leaders hope the residen
tial campaign can be completed by Nov. 15.
