HOLLYWOOD After week
end of suffering through the
horrendous marching bands
that punctuate the televised
football games, Sunday night's
one-woman show by Dinah Shore
was a reward for holding out.
To this viewer, tie prospect
of having to watch Miss Shore
for an hour normally provokes
shudders. I start cutting out des
serts because she has enough
sweetness for all of us. But Sun
day night's outing on NBC-TV
was an almost shocking remind'
er to her old-time admirers that
when she is not selling trading
stamps or cars or gushing for
profit, she can still wallop the
blazes out of a song.
Friends, she sang. And I mean
she really sang; about 20 songs'
worth. And with a minimum of
cuteness and the barest of set
tings a simple studio sound
stages she held forth with a
program that was far superior
to the heralded Julie Andrews-
Carol Burnett special of earlier
this year, despite its Carnegie
Hall-and-black-tie aura. If Miss
Shore is not quite as dramatic
and pulsating a singer as Judy
Garland, that is nothing to be
ashamed of; no one else is
either.
Miss Shore's show was, almost
entirety, the nightclub act
she has displayed at the Eden
Roc Hotel in Miami and is pres
ently doing at the Riviera Hotel
in Las Vegas, Nev. It was in
formal, chatty and pleasant; the
photography was striking and
unadorned; the star was mature,
radiant and exquisite. Her usual
frequent costume changes were
bypassed as she employed only
the gown; this helped preserve
the feeling of continuity.
Her songs were mostly the
kind that she does best! and
that shot her to the top a gen
eration ago: blues, ballads and
spirituals. These were inter
woven by her sure-handed show-

Brinkley Visits All-Negro City
An unusual tale of voluntary
segregation in the all-Negro
town of Mound Bayou, Miss., is
the subject of "David Brinkley's
Journal," which will be tele
cast tonight at 10 o'clock on
Channels 13 and 8.
The town was founded by two-ex-slaves
in 1887 and has re
mained an all-Negro town since
that time. Although the town
celebrated its 75th anniversary
last summer and its residents'
pride in their personal "free
dom" remains intact, the kind
of economic isolation they sup
port is beginning to demand a
change.
Brinkley interviews the
town's postmaster, C. V. Thur
mond, to illustrate the need
for a break with tradition.

Woman to Visit
Son in Russia

74-year-old Little Rock woman
left by plane for Russia Sunday
to visit a son she hasn t seen in
more than 50 years.
Mrs. Frank Lukly said she
came to the United States in
1912 to marry Frank Lukly and
left her lOycar-old son by a
former marriase with her fa
thcr.
Mrs. Lukly lost contact with
her family in the Russian revo
lution and World War I.
She said she learned more
than i year ago through
friend's relatives that her son
Brosi Bclman, was I civil engi
neer at Odessa on the Black
Sea.
Patricia Blair plays the role
of Lou Mallory who arouses
some suspicions in the towns
people shortly after her arrival
in North Fork. She will be a
regular on the show hereafter.

which she was assisted briefly
by six fellows known as the
Even Half Dozen," who have
unique way with vocal back
ing and sound effects for laughs.
Miss Shore's arrangers, her
long-time pianist Tucker Free
man, and her musical conductor,
Frank Devol, deserve bonuses
from her. And so do the "Even
Half Dozen," for the way they
backed her in a driving, cheer
getting tune called "Glory of
Love." The effect and mood cre
ated by this and other songs
was an achievement in view of
the fact Miss Shore avoided an
easy nightclub setting in favor
of a straight concert perform
ance with an audience sitting
out front.
After this spectacular dash
into the past, I suppose Miss
Shore will be back to parceling
out sugar and spice and every
thing nice; but I hope she wUl
be encouraged to devote more
time in future shows to those
viewers who respect simple, un
sweetened talent, because she
is singing better now than ever
before.

Merv Griffin is now host of a
daily 55-minute afternoon show
on NBC-TV which is in effect a
day-time version of the "To
night" program, and even in
cludes many of the same guests.
Griffin, the third of NBC's Jack
Paars (the second is Johhny
Carson), is Paar for the after
noon course; and the show, by
default, is better than anything
else on at the same time.

NEW YORK What was to be
the most exciting television of
the weekend was the big show
that never got on the air at all:
The World Series at San Fran
cisco. One unanticipated result of
having a pennant-winning base
ball club on the West Coast has
been that California's unusual
weather received a lot of very
bad publicity. Every television
station and radio station was
busily issuing rain bulletins
from San Francisco and quoting
odds on the chances the critical
game would go on.
NBC's weekly news show,
"Update," aimed at the teen-age
audience, went back on the air
Sunday afternoon with youthful
host Robert Abernathy showing
pictures of a pretty young Bol
shoi ballerina followed by an
intelligent brief resume of
events leading up to the current
Berlin crisis.
The Berlin portion, with il
lustrations from newsreel clips,
was simply stated and enlighten
ing to older viewers. But I must
say that Abernathy's explanation
of our national position (We
won't chicken out on our West
Berlin friends, he said) seemed
to carry teen-age vernacular a
little far.
At program's end, I looked
out my front window and found
all the teen-agers in my neigh
borhood in the middle of a fierce
game of touch football. Maybe
Abernathy has more post-teens
than youngsters in his audience,
at least at this game-playing season.
