This shot of an auto peeking out of the bushes was
taken shortly after the heavy winds struck the Eugene
area. There was no accurate estimate of damage due
to dents in cars, but body and fender workers will be
busy for months.
The utility pole which appears to be a
tree and the car-shaped flower pot from
which it is growing seem to represent
the main types of damage in Eugene.
Another damage scene was at the Amazon housing
project for married University of Oregon students.
One student was killed by flying debris from the roof
of nearby Roosevelt Junior High School, Tills car was
stopped cold by flying lumber. "
Much of the tree toppling which came yesterday
wouldn't have happened in August. As shown above,
tree roots surrendered when the winds came the
rains of the past week had made the soil loose and
soggy and the roots couldn't hold.
