Oregon's 36-man football squad,
determined to win its first game
against a Texas team in history,
arrived here Thursday night fol
lowing an uneventful six-hour,
non-stop air flight from Eugene.
Coach Len Casanova sent his
Oregon Webfoots through a one
hour workout at Texas Memo
rial Stadium and will hold a
warmup drill Friday night in
preparation for the third meet
ing with the Texas University
Longhorns Saturday night.
This could be the best Oregon
football team in years, depend
ing on the ability of sophomore
quarterback Bob Berry and the

That's the word from Del Bjork, Oregon football cap
tain in 1936 and i former starting tackle for the Chicago
Bears in the National Football League. Del, who came to
the Webfoots from Astoria, is now a colonel in the headquart
ers 90th infantry division in
Austin, Bjork, who was
with the Bears when they
lost the "World Champion
ship" game to the Washing
ton Redskins (28-21) in
1937, was also a member of
the 1937 College All-Star
team that defeated the
Green Bay Packers 6 0 in
the annual classic in Chica
go. Del will be with us in
the Texas Memorial Stadi
um press box Saturday
night.
Bjork, who watched the
Longhorns last season when
they won 10 of 11 games
and polished off the season
with a 12-7 victory over
Mississippi in the Cotton
Bowl, has offered Len Casa
nova and his staff any help
he is able to give. . . .
In 1941, when coach Tex
Oliver staged his famous
scrimmage before Tucson
friends a couple of days before the Texas game, the Long
horns trampled tho Ducks 71-7. ... In 1047, when Jim
Aiken was Oregon coach, the Horns won 38-13 in Portland.
... In both cases it was superior speed that was the main
factor in the Texas triumphs. , . . Saturday night in Austin
the Texas advantage is expected to bo a combination of a
single-wing type of line (strong and weak side that shifts
accordingly), speed and size. , , ,
Actually the so-called "flip-flop" Texas offense is not I
great deal different from the old single-wing line formations
used by the late Red Sanders at UCLA and Tommy Prothro
at Oregon State. One difference is that Texas does not
"serpentine" Into tho line as did UCLA and OSU. Oregon
has had unusual success defensively against single-wing
formations. ...
Not only will the Texas line average 210 pounds from
end to end, but the backfield is one of the bulkiest in col
lege football with an average of over 200 and an average
height of about 6 feet, 2 inches. . . . Oregon, of course, also
possesses an offense that may confuse some people, good
size and strength in the line and backfield speed.
if From a national standpoint the Oregon-Texas
game is lightly regarded. The Associated Press, for ex
ample, assigned the game "B", third-class coverage. , . ,
The Oregon State-Iowa Stale game In Portland, also Satur
day night, receives top "AA" coverage. , . .
One news service rates Texas a 16-point favorite, prob
ably for several reasons tho 10-1 Texas record last year as
compared to Oregon's 4-6 mark; the two previous meetings
between Oregon and Texas by 64 and 25-point margins.
Some of the Oregon visitors who were in Austin that
Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6, 1941, still swear they heard
shouts of 'Remember the Alamo," although there were no
Mexicans In the Oregon lineup and It wasn't Davcy Crockett's
birth date. . . . Actually tho Longhorns have beaten seven
other opponents by larger margins: Daniel Baker 92-0 in
1915, Baylor 77 0 in 1013, Colorado 76 0 in 1948, SMU 74 0
in 1916, TCU 720 in 1915, Southwestern 700 in 1914 and
Haskell Indians 68 3 in 1910. ... By the same token, Texas
has been beaten 68 0 by Chicago in 1904 and 50-0 by Okla-

rushing offense with an average of 285.8 yards per game,
fourth In total offense (383.1) sixth in scoring (29.1), eighth
in total defense (176.1) and defense against scoring (5.9),
and ninth in rushing defense (90.2). . . .
The reason Texas is so highly regarded this season, do
spite tho loss of All-American halfback Jimmy Saxton, run-'
ning-mate Jack Collins and quarterback Mike Cotton, is that
Texas has fullback Ray Poage, 6 1, 200-pound senior full
back with a 5.5-yard average; sophomore halfback Ernie Koy
(his father was a Texas great) who had a 43.2-yard punting
average in the spring game; halfback Jerry Cook who aver
aged 5.49 yards last season; center Perry McWiUiams, and
linebacker (fullback) Pat Culpepper and a total of 26 letter
men. . . . The Longhorns used the starting units in the
fourth quarter of only two games last season, providing
the experience to give Darrell Royal's Horns great depth,
which may be an important factor under wilting weather
conditions. . . .
An indication of Texas' prowess is that Washington State,
a 22-21 victor over Oregon last season, dropped a 41-8 de
cision to the Longhorns last year. . . . Royal last played a
Casanova-coached Oregon team in 1956 when his Washing
ton Huskies beat Oregon 20-7.

One of the disturbing things
about the Texas offense under
Royal for the past five seasons,
and a challenge to Oregon's de
fense, is that Texas in 1957
scored 21 of the 117 times the
Longhorns had possession of the
ball. In 1958, there were 24
scores on 137 possessions, in
1959, 29 scores on 129 posses
sions, in 1960, 25 scores on 118
possessions, and last year 44
scores on 134 possessions.
But Oregon hopes to be ready
for the flip-flop Texas offense,
although the Texas football sta
tistics for last season's 101 rec
ord are awesome.
