Father Meets Son After 40 Years-
Coincidence Leads to Reunion!

Even outside the Horatio Alger books,
perseverance and patience are large factors,
especially if you're looking for a 40-year-lost
father.
Charles 0. Bietcl, a former Eugene res
tauranteur, found this out recently the per
severance and patience of his son Holly and
daughter-in-law has reunited them, according
to reports in a Sacramento, Calif., newspaper.
Holly was born more than 40 years ago,
but Holly's mother died when the baby was
a week old. That was in New Orleans, La.
The baby's maternal grandparents adopted
the child. The grandfather died some years
later and the grandmother marriesd a man
named Jones. Holly became Holly Jones
through another adoption.
In the early 1930s, the Joneses moved to
Santa Ana, Calif., where Holly went to public
schools and then graduated from the Uni
versity of California. He also married.
All those years, Holly Jones wondered
what had become of his real father, Charles
O. Beitel.
Holly's wife started the ball rolling sever
al years ago. Working for a mail-advertising
firm, she was sending out an offer tq owners
of pickup trucks.
One day she found herself addressing a
letter to a Beitel. Only the name was spelled
incorrectly.
She told Holly, who looked in the Modoc
County telephone book. The name was not
spelled right there, either, so the search was
sidetracked.
But Holly and his wife remembered that
the man ran a general store, and this year
Holly, going through the town of Lookout,
Calif., stopped at the store.
The clerk said that Beitel wasn't around
at the moment, but guessed that Holly Jones
"must be a relative of some kind . , . you
sure look like him."
When Beitel came to the store, he recog
nized Holly right away even though he hadn't
seen him since he was an infant. "I knew
you right away," he explained. "I've been
looking at myself in the mirror for a long
time and you're me, all right."
So the reunion was made.
Beitel, who gained not only a son but also
a daughter-in-law and two grandsons, was a
co-owner of the old Rex Cafe in Eugene and
from 1944 to 1945 was governor of the Eugene
Moose Lodge. He belonged to several Ma
sonic orders. He moved to California in the
early 50s.

cratic and Republican national
committees have fired up the
election campaign boilers with
quite an assortment of ways to
win the voters over.
Both committees are out with
campaign manuals which tell
how to cultivate all types
young, old, laborer, professional,
farmer and, once you have
them on your side, how to get
them to the polls in November.
The booklets go right to the
basics.
First you contact the poten
tial voters, extend warm greet
ings, talk their language, and
try to make them sympathetic
to your party's aims. The busi
ness of the so-called issues is
left to the campaigners them
selves. These basic mechanics also

literature, advertising, sound
trucks, finances, poll-watching,
publicity, precinct organization,
volunteers, cultivating generous
money donors, and more, such

Novelty gadgets and badges,
where to be seen, how to soothe
ruffled feelings, where it Is
smartest to advertise, and auto
mobile bumper stickers which,
the Democratic manual notes,
are most effective on the front
bumper.
Also mentioned is the busi
ness of analyzing how you won
or, less happily, why you lost.
The GOP precinct manual
contains a little piece of hope
ful advice from Abraham Lin
coln: "I do not deny the pos
sibility that the people may err
in an election; but if they do,
the true remedy is in the next
election."
That is the essence of what
the national committees are
trying to get over to every pre
cinct worker in the nation. As
Lincoln put it on another oc
casion: "The whole state must be so
well organized that every Whig
can be brought to the polls. So
divide the county into small
districts and appoint in each a
committee. Make a perfect list
of the voters and ascertain for
certainty for whom they will
vote. Keep a constant watch on
the doubtful voters and have
them talked to by those in whom
they have confidence. On elec
tion day see that every Whig is
brought to the polls."
That, a century later, is the
objective of the committees.
