Senate OKs
McCIoskey
Democrats Defeat
Demands for Probe

cratic Party treasurer, will be
packing soon for Dublin.
His nomination by President
Kennedy as ambassador to Ire
land was confirmed by the Sen
ate by voice vote Thursday after
Republican demands for further
investigation by the Senate For
eign Relations Committee were
rejected 62-30.
Democrats voted solidly against
the motion by Sen. John J. Wil
liams. R-Del to have the com
mittee review old investigations
into the 1946 purchase of the St.
Johns River Shipyard at Jack
sonville, Fla., by the Tampa
Shipbuilding Co., controlled by
Industrialist Louis Wolfson.
Williams said the investiga
tions showed McCIoskey pulled
strings with the Maritime Com
mission to permit the Wolfson
company to change its bid from
an installment to a cash basis
to win the award of the contract
in January 1946.
Williams also charged that a
Wolfson employe had made a
payment of $25,000 to David R.
Knapp, a Maritime Commission
employe, prior to the transaction.
Sen. John Sparkman, D-Ala.,
acting chairman of the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee,
read a letter from McCIoskey de
nying any participation in the
Wolfson contract and any knowl
edge of the payment.
Couple Sent
To Hospital
PORTLAND W Federal
Judge Gus J. Solomon sen
tenced a Portland man and wife
to prison terms Wednesday,
then ordered them to the U.S.
Public Health Service Hospital
for treatment.
Both are addicted to nar
cotics, he said.
Solomon sentenced William
H. MacGowan, 33, to 20 years
in prison for violation of nar
cotics laws and gave Mrs. Mac
Gowan a five-year term for
forgery.
He added that MacGown's
sentence can be reduced if re
ports are favorable during a 90
day observation period while
he is in custody.
The federal hospital is at
Lexington, Ky.

ham A. Ribicoff, the first mem
ber of President Kennedy's
Cabinet to resign, heads for the
Connecticut Democratic state
convention Friday night to
fight for the nomination for U.
S. senator.
With the backing of Demo
cratic National Chairman John
Bailey and other party leaders,
Ribicoff is expected to get the
nomination without trouble.
"I like the challenge of elec
tive office," Ribicoff said
Thursday night in a television
speech announcing his resigna
tion as secretary of health, edu
cation and welfare.
Challenge is what he prompt
ly got from his opponent for
the nomination. Congressman-at-large
Frank Kowalski.
Kowalski issued a statement
claiming he had been offered
U. S. Sen. Thomas Dodd's job
if he would consent to run
again for Congress this year and
leave the field clear for Ribi
coff. Dodd's current term ends in
1964.
Ribicoff and Bailey, both tar
gets to Kowalski's frequent
charges of bossism, pooh-poohed
his accusation.

Her father, Harry Wilson Jr.,

lulu to San Francisco. He is
Hawaiian, Chinese and English;
Mrs. Wilson is Portuguese.
