How fast does a stone fall?
A few weeks ago, Andy was
explaining the word gravity
used as a measuring unit. He
mentioned the speed of falling
bodies and one of the items he
reported was quite wrong. Andy
made a boo-boo. Many kind
readers wrote to point out the
error. But the mistake must be
corrected at once, or some
young space traveler may plan
hi orbit based on the wrong
figlires.
A falling stone speeds up as
it Approaches the ground and
this special kind of speed-up is
called acceleration. A falling
body gathers speed and at al
most every point of the journey
downward it is traveling at a
different rate. What's more,
thete are other factors in this
already complicated picture.

WASHINGTON The lights
of .Manhattan's skyscrapers are
seen at night by hundreds of
small, shining eyes the eyes of
deer, mink,, and muskrat who
thrjve across, the river in New
Jersey's "Great Swamp."
The 8,000-acre Great Swamp,
a wilderness virtually unchanged
since the days of the Indian, is
one of the largest, unspoiled
naftirnl wetlands between Maine
and Virginia, reports the Na
tiohal Geographic Society.
A 25-acre section of the
swamp will open this summer
as J nature center. Trails are
planned through this and ad
jacent areas. Plants and trees
will be marked, and blinds will
enable visitors to observe birds
ana animals.

Factors Affect Speed

which seems like a filmy noth
ing, resists a falling body and
causes it to slow down. This air
resistance is strong enough to
cancel out the acceleration
speed of an object falling from
a very great height, say, out of
an airplane.
These various factors make a
difference to the speed of a
falling body and we have to
take them into consideration
when plotting the path. Since a
stone may fall from a high or
low position, through a thick or
thinner layer of air, the falling
speed will be different in al
most every case and it will
certainly be different at vari
ous points on the downward
journey. However, we can take
a standard unit to get a rough
estimate of the speed of a fall
ing stone.
This standard unit is the
gravity of the earth exerted on
falling bodies. This pulling en
ergy is the same in all cases
and in theory, a feather should
fall as fast as a stone.
When it does not do this, it
are found with epileptics of
various types in some in
stances special patterns may
appear in people subject to
certain types of severe head
aches. Tumors, if they exist in the
brain, can be located accu
rately with the EEG. Infec
tions, hemorrhages and other
conditions also will affect the
patterns.
The EEG, therefore, Is an
extremely useful device. I
doubt whether we have yet
come close to discovering all
of its possible uses.
Nevertheless, it can't re
veal everything we may need
to know. Some disease condi
tions can exist very deep in
the brain, or in the cerebel

No, a "negative" EEG isn't

The weight of a cloud changes I
during its lifetime. Before it is
born, it is water vapor and this
gas is a bit lighter than the
other gases of the air. Then the
vapor becomes fine droplet of
water and water is too heavy
to float in the air. But so long
as the droplets stay small with
lots of air space between them,
the misty cloud is light enough
to float.
But gradually, the water drop
lets become bigger and the
misty cloud gets heavier. Soon
its too heavy to float in the air
and down spills the rain.

Many small faults become

A "compound fracture"
means that jagged edges of
the bone broke into the flesh
and skin, opening a path for
germs to enter. "Osteomyel
itis" means infection of the
bone.
The most diligent care can
not guarantee that germs
won't sneak in. It's an ever
present risk with this type
of injury.
However, modern antibi
otics arc very good in combat
ting osteomyelitis. A decade
or two ago, without the drugs,
your son might well havo lost
his leg instead.
