Rewarding Tale
Fantasy Finally
Makes It to TV
HOLLYWOOD It took tele
vision five years to finally air
Sunday night's "Show of the
Week": An H. G. Wells fantasy
about a race of isolated, blind
people who distrust those with
vision. It was worth waiting for.
Entitled "The Richest Man in
Bogota," and staring Lee Mar
vin, it was rewarding not only
as an exciting horror talc, but
as a love story and a uniquely
timely commentary on societies
which maintain fear and hatred
by preventing contact with the
outside world.
Sunday night's offering, from
short story which Wells
called "The Country of the
Blind," was turned down by a
car sponsor more than five years
ago. But producer -director
Ralph Nelson, who also guided
Rod Serling's memorable tele
play "Requiem For A Heavy
weight," saved the Frank Ga-
brielson script.
And NBC-TV and DuPont, the
sponsor, finally okayed it after
the title change was made so it
would be more palatable after
a Father's Day dinner. The plot
is a good adventure story in it
self:
A South American prospector
(Marvin), armed with a geigcr
counter, sets out from Bogota,
Columbia, in search of uranium
in the mountains near his home.
In a spectacular avalanche scene
that seemed to burst through
the small telcvison screen, he
is -swept away to the hidden
Valley of the Damned, where
the eyeless people discover him.
He is considered a strange
and wild creature by the sight
less ones, who believe there is
no other world but their own.
He is threatened with death un
less he conforms to their beliefs

Negligence
'Not a Factor'
By RICK DU BROW
Of the United Press International
and promises to respect the
mountain boundaries as the lim
its of all being. To survive, he
conforms but plans to escape.
A native girl, beautifully
played by Miriam Colon, falls in
love with him and begins to be
lieve his tales of the outside
world are not so wild. She
yearns to sec for tne lirst time.
They run away, and she is killed
by a native. He escapes. In a
surprise ending, he is shown
years later as a wealthy man m
Bogota who has devoted his life
to helping those in the isolated
valley and has become blind
himself.
Beyond the adventure level.
the plot had overtones of
Goorgc Orwell's futuristic hor
ror story of a closed, brain
washed society, "1984." The na
tives do not understand such
words as "light," "see" and out."
A history written by their an
cestors is useless because they
cannot read. The way to cure
Marvin, they believe, is to bund
him also. They have, in other
words, made their defect into
a self-righteous belief.
In a classically staged escape
scene, a native leader says:
"Sound the call for silence." If
everyone else is silent, those
who protest can be heard easily
and singled out.
Marvin was a powerful repre
sentation of the universal hero:
The man who fights to main
tain his sanity amid a blindly
herded populace, who conforms
only by choice. The drama, im
pressively produced and using a
thin latex material to cover the
actors' eyes was an uplifting
plea for the power of personal
courage, faith and love.

Golf Match
Best Drama
Of Weekend
By CYNTHIA I.OWRY
ot the Associated Tress
The weekend's most thrilling
drama was the real life duel be
tween Jack Nicklaus and Arnold
Palmer Sunday for the National
Open golf championship. The
playoff of Saturday's tie was a
real cliff-hanger right up to the
putts on the last hole, when
Nicklaus was able to hold onto
his two-stroke lead.
NBC's staff photographed the
match well, but the commenta
tors felt, apparently, that they
had to chatter every second,
even when the situation was
self - explanatory. Eventually,
they ran out of smalt talk but
Bud Palmer filled time by en
thusiastically wishing male
viewers a happy Father's Day.
Highlight of Friday's news
special also on NBC on Ger
many was a remarkable innova
tion: The program actually used
Germans who could not speak
English for interviews. It used
instantaneous translations and
it was a good idea. Television
usually confines its overseas in
terviews to people who speak
fluent English rather than to
the best or most intelligent
sources.

PORTLAND W) The presi

said Sunday that negligence was
not a factor in an incident
which resulted in the death of a
six-month-old boy Friday.
Homer D. Angell said the as
signed attendant was absent for
about five minutes, during
which two girls aged 4 and 2
apparently pulled two baby boys
from their cribs.
The babies fell on their
heads. Robert Wesley Morris

Angell said the attendant
thought all children in the ward

"Our investigation indicates
that there was no negligence in-
