Carpenter Brought
Real Drama to TV
By RICK DU BROW
Of United Press International
HOLLYWOOD Scott Carpenter's 40-minute loss of radio
contact upon re-entry from his orbital flight resulted Thursday
in perhaps the most terrifying viewing experience American
television has ever known.
Until a search plane picked the astronaut's high frequency
radio beacon out of the Atlantic Ocean and provided a happy
ending for the extraordinary drama, there was the nightmarish
dread that a national tragedy might be unfolding before mil
lions of persons.
Tension started to build when Carpenter began reentering
the earth's atmosphere. Loss of radio contact was expected for
a few minutes. It had happened to his predecessor, John Glenn.
The few minutes passed. Then a few more. And as no word
eame the agonizing fear set in. At New York's Grand Central
Station, where a crowd watched the flight on a large CBS-TV
screen, there was suddenly silence and grimness.
It was almost possible not to think of Carpenter's wife,
parents and four children watching and waiting for an answer.
One television reporter noted that Carpenter had knives in case
of sharks.
Ships and aircraft sped to the area of his expected landing.
Then, suddenly, came the electronic word of contact. And
moments later, viewers heard Col. John Powers announce that a
plane had "sighted a life raft with a gentleman by the name of
Carpenter In it."
The enormous, Instantaneous relief that followed marked
the climax of an event that up to then was relatively uneventful
on television if an orbital flight can be said to be uneventful.
There had been the excitement of blastoff, and some concern
over the heat of Carpenter's suit and his dwindling fuel. But
it had been a very businesslike flight. Carpenter's terse verbal
reports back to Mercury control, heard by viewers, were less
colorful than Glenn's.
Less newsmen were on hand, and there were fewer specta
tors on the beach near Cape Canaveral. The comparative lack
of sensation of the second three-orbit journey at least until the
end was satisfying because it meant more emphasis could be
given to the practical, research matters at hand.
The Channel Swim: Sebastian Cabot, of the "Checkmate"
series, guests on Red Skclton's CBS-TV show Tuesday. . . As
expected, Hugh Downs will be the new host of the "Today"
show on NBC-TV come fall.
NBC-TV's "Hazel" came within .3 of a point of displacing
"Bonanza" as top show in the national ratings for the two
weeks ending May 6. . . Today's scheduled appearance of
Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas on CBS-TV's "Cal
endar" was postponed.
Heat Change
Due June 1
The Eugene Water it Electric
Board has told 275 customers
of the Central Heating Co., they
will buy steam from EWEB ef
fective June 1.
EWEB is buying the com
pany supplying steam to heat
business establishments in
downtown Eusene for approxi
mately $235,000.
The only change Central's
customers will notice at first is
that bills will come from
EWEB. Otherwise, the utility
announced, "you will be served
at the same rates and under
substantially the same rules
and regulations."
EWEB hopes, however, to be
able to extend steam service on
a 24-hour basis instead of the
present 21 hours a day.
EWEB also plans to shut
down Central Heating' steam
plant In downtown Eugene and
aupply all steam from its own
boilers, which have excess ca
pacity over that needed for
electrical generation.

Per Capita
Income Up
In Oregon
Per capita Income in Oregon
in 1961 climbed to the highest
level ever recorded for the
state, for an average of $2,280
per person. But purchasing
power fell off.
The report is made by Elvera
Horrell, an extension economist
at Oregon State University, who
adds that the state's per capita
income ranks 18th among the 50
states, sharing that place with
Pennsylvania.
Last year, she said, Oregon
recorded a total personal in
come of $4.1 billion. That rep
resents a per capita gain of $21,
or nearly 1 per cent greater
than 1960. According to U.S.
Department of Commerce fig
ures, Oregon's per capita in
come was $15 above the na
tional average.
Prices Higher
In terms of purchasing power,
however, Oregonians last year
had about $5 less per person
than they did in 1960, due to a
rise in retail prices of a little
more than 1 per cent, Mrs. Hor
roll said.
Nationally last year, average
per capita income varied from
a high of $3,059 in the District
of Columbia to a low of $1,233
in Mississippi, she reported.
During the first part of 1962
incomes throughout the country
have been on the uptrend and
unofficial estimates place Ore
gon's personal income for Jan
uary and February nearly (Hi
per cent above the same months
Highest Wage
In March this year, according
to the Oregon Employment De
partment, construction workers
had the biggest average wage in
the industrial wage field, with
an average of $138.38 a week.
Next highest pay that month
went to primary metal workers,
$114.27 a week. Next in line
were machinists, $113.19, and
printers at SU2.27 per week.
At the bottom of the list were
canning and preserving work
ers at $71.81 per week. The av
erage weekly wage in Oregon
in March was $100.32, up near
ly $3 a week from March a year
ago, the department reported.
'My Fair Lady'
To Close in July
NEW YORK The musical
"My Fair Lady" ends its record
breaking Broadway run July 7.
The definite closing date was
set Wednesday by Producer Her
man Levin. Since opening March
15, 1958, the show will have
played 2.621 performances, been
seen by 3'4-million people and
grossed almost 20 million dol
lars. "My Fair Lady" broke the
previous White Way musical
run mark of 2.212 set by "Okla
homa" last July. Subsequently it
became international tuneshow
champion by besting the London
record of 2.238 performances set
by "aiu-Chin-Chow."
