For Second Year in Lane
Youth Camp Crew Picked
A camp director, an assistant
for him, and 30 teenagers have
been chosen for the second
Lane County youth forest camp
that will open on June 18.
Glenn Hoff, teacher at How
ard elementary school in Eu
gene, and director of the camp
last summer, has been reappoint
ed to the job, according to
county school superintendent
Dale Parnell.
Ernest Magill, principal of
Blue Mountain elementary
school, will be one of Hoff's
foremen. Another will be chos
en, Parnell said.
Parnell and Lane County
Commissioners got together
Monday and selected 30 boys as
principle candidates, and 30 as
alternates.
The camp, located In the
county's Blue Mountain Park
10 miles southeast of Cottage
Grove, is sponsored by Lane
County and the Oregon State
Forestry Department to provide
work experience for boys.
Parnell said the youth camp
ers not only will outnumber the
20 enrolled in the pilot pro
grams last summer, but will
also be younger, with more
junior high students selected.
Boys chosen are those who
could most benefit from a sum
mer of disciplined work in a
loresc camp environment, ac
cording to Parnell. The goal of
the camp is to encourage boys
to remain in school.
Three boys in the 1961 camp,
Hollis Hogue of Pleasant Hill
High School and Phil Hilty and
Steve Zajanc of North Eugene
High School, were asked to
return to the camp this summer
by the Forestry Department to
act as crew leaders.
Parnell said that work pro
grams have not yet been deter
mined, but possible nroiects in
clude enlarging Blue Mountain
Park into an overnight camp
ing park, or improving park
sites at Dorcna reservoir.
