Stock Market Closes Higher
For Third Day in Succession
NEW YORK Wl The stock
market closed higher Thursday, I
racking up its third straifiht
daily advance. Trading was
moderately active.
Volume for the day was esti
mated at 3.4 million shares com
pared with 3.78 million Wednes
day. Key stocks rose from frac
tions to a point while some of
the more volatile or higher
priced issues did better.
IBM continued its comeback
with a 10-point jump.
Texas Instruments, Minneapolis-Honeywell
and Backman
Instruments gained about 4
Apiece. Corning Glass tacked on
about 5, General Foods and
Champlin Oil about 2 apiece.
Ford spurted more than a
point following news of record
sales. General Motors was up
close to a point and other autos
gained fractions.
Also up about ?. points were
First-Quarter Profit
DETROIT W) Ford Motor
Co. Wednesday reported a first
quarter profit of $127.7 million,
or $2.32 a share, up sharpiy
from the $76.2 million, or $1.39
a share, earned in the first
three months of last year.
The profit was the third
highest ever reported by Ford
for a first quarter.
Du Pont, Anaconda and Philip
Morris.
Ahead around a point were
Youngstown Sheet. Goodyear,
General Electric, AT&T, Royal
Dutch and Kennecott.
Steels were all lower at the
start but as trading progressed,
Youngstown Sheet rose more
than a point. U.S. Steel wiped
out an early loss.
Prices on the American Slock
Exchange were irregularly high
er in moderate trading.
Corporate bonds were mixed;
U.S. government bonds were
higher.

European pine shoot moth has
been found in southeast Port
land. The Slale Forestry De
partment said Wednesday slops
are being taken lo try to con

It was found in southern
Portland lasl year, but was
stopped by killing the infested
trees.
The new discovery was made
after inspecting 61,000 trees on
residential properly. It was
found on three properties.
